A centenarian with all the dignity and maturity of age, this is one of Ireland’s great championship links. The course is one of golf’s great challenges and the level of difficulty varies with the diverse weather conditions experienced. The course was redesigned by the famous golf architect Harry S. Colt in 1927 and continuous improvements have been made over the years to make the County Sligo course, in the words of the great Peter Alliss:
“A tremendous test for the highest quality player and great fun for the modest competitor, Rosses Point stands at the very top of the list of Irish courses”.
The spectacular scenery of mountain, ocean and countryside which surrounds this classic links has been immortalised in the poetry of William Butler Yeats.
The course is currently ranked in the top 10 list of Irish Golf courses and features in the top 50 in Great Britain & Ireland and was honoured to be chosen as the 2011 venue for the SENIOR & JUNIOR INTERPROVINCIALS, the HOME INTERNATIONALS and the CARR MARA TROPHY.
The club is the home of the famous West of Ireland Open amateur championship played every Easter since 1923 and has hosted many other prestigious events including the Home Internationals, the Irish Close and the Irish Professional Matchplay Championship. Previous winners of the West include Joe Carr, Padraig Harrington, Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry.
