JAYCO POP UP CAMPER MODS | Swan | Hawk | Eagle | Out N About Australia

A quick walkaround and look at some of the future mods we have planned for our Jayco Hawk Outback.

We bought this camper trailer as a way to dip our toes into the camper trailer world without spending loads of money and maybe not liking the camper trailer or caravan lifestyle.
Not a bad way to go if you're wanting to test the lifestyle out before fully committing or buying big.

I hope these upgrades give you some ideas for your own camper trailer or caravan.
As always we'll try to keep all our costs down and provide you guys the best budget options as well as showing the higher price options as well.

I have had my 03 Dove for 2 years now. Only mods have been setting up for solar with 100amh LIfepo4. Painted the interior and laid stick on floorboards. Bed fly conversion and Fiamma awning, removed the bag awning because we never use it. Keep the 3way fridge because its cheap to run and works well. Did the fan mod for the fridge. If you go to an electric fridge, make sure yo have great solar, 300w at least and min 200mah battery. That style fridge burns through the power. Inside lights have Led bulb inserts which use less power and give off good light. left the outside lights standard as they look retro and not like every other camper. Will replace as needed. The outside step light, I changed it to an LED bulb but it was way too bright. I put the incadecent bulb back in and because it is not that bright, it works fine. Great to see aussies rocking these old Jayco's, they are great vans and you dont have to be precious with them. Cheers.

I have a 2011 Jayco outback hawk, I am only new, and you are doing a great job.

WE have the same Hawk as you and love it with teh modifications we have made. I have done heaps of mods myself. I have changed to a 12v compressor fridge in the past. DONT do it. It didn't run very well, and used HEAPS of 12v. Upgraded to lithium (as I thought it was the AGM) and that didn't help. Ended up buy a new 3 way 95lt and back to where I started. Added extraction fans to assist the new three way fridge. This made all the difference to making the fridge run great in Qld on LPG. Lithium will cost more than you think, as you will need a lithium charge control and DCDC for on the road. Pay particular attention to how you wire the car to trailer as the 3way need access to the alternator while travelling, but it will kill you battery while you're stopped. Other mod's; I put drawer in all the cupboards ( a heap of work but really worth it), extra supports under the parents bed, curtain wires for the privacy curtain on the bed, moved all the electrical and water to the back corner to maximise available storage, removed the canvas had all the flyscreen's replaced, added the second gas bottle holder, added extra 12v socket to the underside in the can for Waeco outside, added the ISI 4x bike carrier, replaced the internal manual pump with a lithium rechargeable water bottle pump (way easier than the 12v pressure pump) also made a custom outside camp kitchen. I can send picture of all the mods if you're interested, would make a heap content for you channel.

We have a 2002 Eagle and I can't stand the frills and curtains either! Will be changing them at some point. Probably doing new covers for the cushions as well. Why do camper/van manufacturers always use such hideous fabrics?

What I can't work out is how to open the hatch/skylight? Do you have any vids or pics of the one in yours? It looks kind of the same as ours but we have a couple of wingnuts which I'm not convinced are supposed to be there.

Flick the fridge mate. Dometic do a CRX110 fridge freezer that will slot straight in. $1, 684 is what I paid from My Generator Power Products. This the best thing I’ve done to my Jayco Eagle. They’re so much more efficient.

Yes leave the three way fridge and install fans at the back. Leave the outside lights the way they are. Led the inside lights. Stick to an agm battery. Don’t over capitalise.

weve got a flamingo 2006 o/r similar type of camper in regards to mods , jockey wheel , will do , gas lines done , handles and lights all done, extra 12v sockets inside and out, car stereo and speakers. dual batteries were in but add a lot of weight so will be changing to lithium. 3 way fridge are worth keeping cos they are efficient when stationary use bugger all gas . we have 200w of solar .we have a 80ltr ac/dc which we store under table. 35mm cable anderson plug from car to trailer to charge batteries while driving .a better charging system in the van is one thing i'd like to invest in and dual water tanks and pump but this can end up a heavy addition generally we carry extra water in the ute tray. we have an external barbeque in a compartment similar to your battery /spares compartment we have used the inside to cook about 5 times in 10 years .this keeps the van clean and smell free and easier to tidy.

Great vid mate. My wife and I have just done the same thing as you. Bought 2001 Jayco Flightt. Same type of van as yours only smaller. so will be interested to see how you go with the changes. Some of the changes you mentioned I too want to do to ours. How is the winding mechanism on your van. One of the legs on our vean does not work well.

Hey man ..the family and I just brought pretty much the exact same as you …my opinion with the fridge is it’s perfect on gas works a treat …on 12v I wouldn’t even bother…and mains it’s gose ok ….I use my camp fridge and esky aswell can’t beat drinks on ice …..also would you be able to do a video on changing the power plugs you mentioned as I need to do the same

3 way fridges are thirsty on power should you run them off your battery but I only ever run mine on mains power or gas for this reason. Having a 3 way fridge means you are not reliant on having to have a power source. You can literally go off grid for weeks on end and as long as you have gas, you will have a working fridge. Compressor fridges for me, are great for 4x4 set ups where you may not want to carry a 2nd gas bottle (to save on space) and have battery or 2 to run everything.
