My opinion is at least for stroke play, the gimme distance changes dependent on what the putt is for. Here's the chart:

For Birdie or better: must putt out
For Par: 2 feet
For Bogey: 2.5 feet
For Double: 3 feet
For Triple: 4.5 feet
For Quad or worse: 6 feet

Gimmes suck. Really shows during the member/guest tournament where you have to putt everything out, under pressure.

I hate gimme putts as I'm a better putter than my playmates just saying that as they've said it for years so don't want gimme putts at all but they do at times I think every putt should be holed then there's no arguments over lengths of gimmes given either

Gimmes are to save time, and I dont relate to soccer. No gimmes in tourneys.
