In reality his influence on modern drummers was one step removed, since there is virtually no film footage and until recently there was very little on record that was easily accessible. It is great that so many 'cleaned up' remastered versions of his songs are becoming available to us, but until now his influence was only via other drummers who had heard him in the 20s and 30s. A tragedy he died so young (34) in 1939. He should have had 30 years of professional playing in him... imagine he had played throughout the 40s, 50s and 60s and we had a rich archive of his performances on film, video and Hi Fi records? I think drumming might well have developed very differently.

in the comments everybody tends to forget trumpet player Taft Jordan, and trombonist Sandy Williams superb soloists, that had no counter parts in white bands of the period.
