I play this song everyday in the morning. I brings me back to when I was 12 years old.

This song sounds joyful and also adds a bit of sadness at the same time.

One of the most beautiful, uplifting tunes ever, even with the sad history, which even though sad is at the same time so informative in the scrolling pics and is reminding and encouraging of what progress we have made. Bless the souls of those who suffered such indescribably injustice!

When I first heard this I thought that it would be perfect background music for paddlewheels on the Mississippi

I remember hearing it on radio in my very young days. Like a lot of songs it disappeared into the annals of music history. Thank goodness for YouTube where we can relive the old days and fine music like this which, sad to say, not much of which is recorded any longer.

The Stompers are absolute classic! I grew up with their music as well as others like the Dutch Swing College Band, Doc Severinson and Acker bilk - as well as other stuff like the Ventures etc. constantly filling the house. Wonderful memories :-)

On this day in 1963 {Nov. 17th} "Washington Square" by The Village Stompers peaked at #2 on Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart; it stayed at #2 for one week & was kept out of the top spot by "I'm Leaving It Up to You" by Dale and Grace
On Nov. 2nd, 1963 it reached #1 {for 3 weeks} on Billboard's Adult Contemporary Single chart {but "I'm Leaving It Up To You" knocked it out of #1}
The group had two other Top 100 records; "From Russia With Love" {#81 in 1964} & "Fiddler On The roof" {#97 in 1964}

I'd normally relate this music to rural America in the 30's, but this was a good use of that tune.
