What is Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery Planning?

Accountability and ownership are the foundations of business continuity and disaster recovery. There has to be someone in charge of the process for it to be successful. Also, a good business continuity and disaster recovery plan will need a purpose, scope and authority. The purpose helps define the intent of the policy and the scope defines which parts of an organization are covered by the policy. Authority grants the people responsible for BC/DR the ability to actually get things done.

Once you've developed the BC/DR plan, you also perform a business impact analysis to understand the ramifications of losing access to any given piece of technology. That analysis gets fed through a critical analysis so we understand the risks, which helps inform our recovery goals.
