Astrophotography Cameras: What's the Best Choice?

In this video, I explain the key differences between 3 astrophotography cameras, and what they're best at. I cover the pros and cons of each camera and share a number of example images using each.

Beginners often start out with a DSLR (Digital Single-Lens Reflex) camera because they are affordable and versatile - and I still think this is the best route to take.

Thank you all for your time and support over the years!!

Astrophotography is a very difficult field. It takes a lot of time, money and knowledge. But it gives a lot of satisfaction!!!

Many Pentax DSLR models have a built-in "astrotracer" feature or can work with an astrotracer accessory part, which uses sensor movement (including rotation) to compensate for earth's rotation. This is a great way to do longer exposures without involving an equatorial mount.

If going the DSLR route, certainly look at the Pentax line. Their full-frame K1-ii has a built-in AstroTracer function (exclusive to Pentax) that allows star tracking for 5-minute exposures _without_ an auxiliary tracking device. Other Pentax models can do the same thing with a $150 accessory. It uses precise GPS tracking to control the movement of the camera's sensor to track against the Earth's rotation. It also tags your photos with GPS coordinates, of course. The K1-ii is also the best landscape camera in its price range.

I can't believe I followed that video and know nothing about any of this stuff. Well spoken and explained. Thanks!

Man, definitely agree about that mono learning curve. I jumped to mono, narrowband and wheel so quickly and it was a big, big mistake. Sold it all up and went back to DSLR for a bit 😅 nice video Trevor. Really want my hands on a 294 but they're like hen's teeth these days

I'm new to astrophotography but I think that overall what really matters is how that photo taken with your Dslr (or dedicated one) camera make you feel...

I just have a Celestron 130 slt and a Nikon D5600 but I can guarantee you that I was happy like a child when I saw what it could do...🥰🥰

Let's not forget that is all about us that want to see the universe and it is emotional... it's not a "competition"... (At least this is what I think)
Nice video by the way...good analysis as well...

Do not forget to see the stars with your eyes 🥰🥰

2:29 The reason why bayer filters have two green filters for each red/blue is that the efficiency of the green sensitive pixels are about half that of red/blue. That and chips have a rectangular matrix 4 sided square symmetry vs triangular 3 sided symmetry. However, you point still stands that we don't need green. Thanks Trevor! You're the best!

I was sceptical at first reading that title, cuz as you said, there really isn't any best camera. It's what suits your pocket and taste. Very well presented. Thank you for listing the pros and cons of each type of camera in such detail. Excellent material as always.keep up the good work mate!

This is the best camera gear video I have seen. Great job focusing on the experience each brings rather than the technical details. This is going to help a lot of people. Thanks!

Splendid job! My hobby just arrived in AP as I moved to Arizona 2 years ago. This video clarifies so many thoughts in my mind. Appreciate it.

For the last year I've been making do with a modified webcam and un modded entry level mirrorless camera after previously using mono and OSC dedicated CCD's. Conclusion, you can have fun with any camera if you choose an appropriate target. I've had lots of fun with my £15 Logitech 720. Whatever you buy just make the best of it :)

Hi Trevor, you made making a choice super easy for a beginner. I have been struggling alot in terms of gear but now, i will stick to mastering the fundamentals before upgrading. Luv from Arctic Canada.
