So it is useful for coaches, so they can understand if their players are overperforming the average or underperforming, when striking from similar positions, so the coaches can get specific training drills based on that. It is absolutely not a stat for people to say "this team should have won they had better xG" like so many people use it for

you can also think of it as a percentage, 0.99 you have a 99% chance of scoring, 0.2 you have a 20% chance of scoring, all these are added up and you get your overall amount of xG

I'm a stats guy, and it's definitely interesting and arguably informative.

However, I'm also a betting guy, and it does make you sad when the team you back loses 1-2 despite the xG being something like 3-1. 😅

I prefer xxG, or Expected Expected Goals. It’s where you try to to guess what the expected goals figure will be before it’s shown on screen.
