ADHD 101: What Is ADHD? - Mental Health Awareness - Join BasedShaman as we learn about Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and what living with ADHD is like. Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a brain disorder marked by an ongoing pattern of inattention and/or hyperactivity-impulsivity that interferes with functioning or development and can present difficulties for parents in dealing with their ADHD children. Today we will be answering the question that many ask: what is ADHD like?

The symptoms of autism spectrum disorders and ADHD overlap. Most kids on the autism spectrum have symptoms of ADHD: difficulty settling down, social awkwardness, the ability to focus only on things that interest them, and impulsivity. ADHD itself, however, is not part of the autism spectrum. Inattention and hyperactivity/impulsivity are the key behaviors of ADHD. Some people with ADHD only have problems with one of the behaviors, while others have both inattention and hyperactivity-impulsivity. Most children have the combined type of ADHD.

While ADHD kids behavior can present many difficulties, parents have several choices in tacking this situation as there are several forms of ADHD treatment that we will be looking at. These range from ADHD therapy to the different types of ADHD medication. Please let me know which types of ADHD treatment you think are the best choices for families trying to do the best they can for their kids.

For me I have ADD but from my experience I don’t think it’s an attention deficit, it’s an excess of attention. I constantly pay attention to everything except to the thing I’m supposed to do. It’s like my brain is constantly stimulated and that makes it really hard to just chill or sleep.

I feel like the whole helping people thing started as a motivation, but then just became the main purpose for the existence of the channel. The fact that helping people was a secondary while passion was a primary was what made old Shaman so good.

I have ADHD and I never "grew out of it." I was actually diagnosed as an adult. Medication helps.

There are 2 types of ADHD. Type 1 is hyperactivity, type 2 is the inattentive type.

I have lots of ADHD people in my family and in my life. ADHD is real but misdiagnosed often. And putting children who can't sit still for seven hours straight in school on powerful amphetamines as treatment is not right.

You work on teaching your child self awareness and to consciously think before acting. You teach them to connect actions with consequences and to consider consequences before acting. It's a process of giving gentle reminders to be mindful.

Giving kids healthy fidgets can help them focus, stay seated, and listen. Positive reinforcement of successes is incredibly powerful.

So the paragraph before the list of symptoms says children who don't pay attention in just school as opposed to home life & their relationships do not have ADHD...but then the list of symptoms almost all pertain to a child's actions in school.
There's a documentary, The War on Kids, that dives into how society is over medicating children who do not actually have ADHD/ADD but are being treated as such because they are restless in specifically classroom settings - a pretty unnatural setting for energized, exploratory kids to be in.

I have ADHD and have had the diagnosis itself since I was about 5 or 6 years old. It was pretty difficult to manage at first but now I have no problems with it whatsoever. I wouldn't cure it even if I could.

Havent finished watching so I'm not sure if this video will cover more than the hyperactive form of ADHD? Not all people with ADHD are hyper/impulsive, which is a big misconsception. There are 3 known types from what I understand - hyperactive, inattentive and combination. Girls are more likely to be an inattentive type because they are more calm/agreeable/etc in nature. Not enough research has been done on ADHD or on mental disorders in general. Funny how we can go to the moon but dont know how our brains fully work.

I think I might have ADHD but havent been diagnosed. My friend has been selling me their medication (vyvanse) and it has been helping me immensely. Makes me feel like I'm my full potential and real self. It's amazing to be able to listen to something and not lose track or get lost in my head, or have a normal conversation, among other things.

Well. I have been Diagnosed with ADHD it is like you have To Do 2 Things at Same Time. I'll Take Medication To Concentrate but like Everybody with ADHD actually Can Focus even Hyper focus on Things They Really Passionate about and Really Enjoy If They Don't Enjoy what they're Doing there is simply No point in Continuing it.

I have high functioning aspergers, and somehow have out grown my social disadvantages. I'm really happy to be able to talk with people without it always being awkward all the damn time.

Cluster B Personality Disorders? These are characterised by dramatic, overly emotional or unpredictable thinking or behaviour. They include: Antisocial Personality Disorder, Narcissistic Personality Disorder, Borderline Personality Disorder, and Histrionic Personality Disorder. Perhaps you could make a segment for each one? Really fascinating stuff, and I love how you've decided to tackle mental/neurological disorders.

I’ve got ADHD, Depression and both generalized anxiety and separation anxiety, as well as ODD, and Dyslexia, and I’m still trying to learn the best way to deal with it personally, I’ve taken almost every medication for ADHD that an adolescent can take, and not much has worked, but to describe my ADHD, imagine someone’s trying to ask a favor, but when they tell you what they want, you immediately forget.
