Why is Hansi Hinterseer such a great skier? In this video I share a few thoughts of what makes him the “King of Short Swing” and why he is a great role model for skiers. I personally think Hansi skiing and ski technique is awesome and is a great role model for how to ski into your older years.

Hansi Hinterseer is one of the most stylish skiers around. I really love his skiing and his flow he has. He is really supple on his skis and just makes skiing look super fun, always smiling and it looks like he is having the best time. I would love to go spend a day ripping around the mountain with him from cafe to restaurant to apre. Who said narrow stance short swing turns aren’t sexy?

Do you like Hansi too? I would love to know what you guys think!

Please go support him over at his channel and website

I just read an very long interview with Hansi in a magazine and that guy is still one of the most down-to-earth people I know.

He's not only a fantastic skier and very very succsessful singer but also a very humble and down to earth guy. Hansi from the neighbourhood.

Reilly, this maybe your best video analysis yet, IMHP : ) !

You seem to be expanding the view of what makes great skiing in this video and the Marcel Hircsher free skiing video. What must be present, in addition to technical precision and discipline, strength and power, and athleticism. Recognizing artistry of results from the touch, flow, fun, and dance that elevates the outstanding from the really damn good skiers. Keep it up.

He is an extremely good skier! Not many left, despite skiing being easier than ever on modern equipment.

Wow Reilly, you know about Hansi Hinterseer?? I’m impressed! 😆
I agree there are similarities between skiing and dancing, and learning rhythm is definitely one of them.

Hinterseer a master full world cup championship skier/legend. the training during his competitive years as a slalom ace formed his technique to be the short swing king. it starts with keeping your upper body in the fall line and having a erect upper body with with your knees slightly flex/bend forward over the ball of your foot as this is considered an upright neutral stance it allows your feet/skis to swivel quickly side to side while remaining in a balanced position and it is very important to not look down at your skis but instead looking forward in the direction of travel. once you master this you move on to the next stage. to make sure your ski poles are just forward enough to see your hands at your side the same as you can see hans skiing in the video. the real secret to those amazing turns are first his incredible skill and he is taking advantage of the new slalom ski side cut which allows a quick j turn and a slight pivot/swivel that looks so cool. each turn starts with pressure on the ball of foot of the downhill ski to give direction to the left or right and finishing with pressure on the heel as you are finishing the turn and beginning the next one. this kind of turn you are using fairly equal pressure/balance on both feet at all times while turning left and right and so on. and a lot of practice 🤗.the best snow conditions for this kind of skiing is velvet smooth dry powder and generally temperatures colder than -7 unless the humidity is very low. don't be fooled by the easy swing skiing the guys an animal and can still tear down at near world cup speed.😳

Dancing and skiing!!! Love it! Hansi really does show the similarities, and your insights about the similarities between ski flow and good dancing are very encouraging to me.

I learned to dance later in life (by taking a lot of lessons), and it was also later in life that I was finally able to ski often, eventually becoming a ski instructor. I find that people who know how to dance usually learn to ski very quickly, and I was intrigued by your comment that many skiers take dancing lessons to improve their skiing.

Mikaela Shiffrin had a quote in an interview last year that I loved: "when I am skiing my best... I feel like I am dancing..." Certainly I am no Mikaela Shriffin, but that's the way I feel also when I am enjoying my skiing. Maybe that's also why many winter sport athletes use earphones and music during their competitions and during their fun runs.

Last year I used a wireless speaker in many of my lessons. Once I had explained what we were going to do, I put on the music and said, "Let's ski!" Most of my students really liked this. It relaxed them, and increased the fun in their lesson.

Thanks for all your videos. I find them very helpful.

Yes, he is the king of twist. Nimble knee work, so smooth. Unfortunately i always feel myself as a stiff plank, after watching him.

His style is definitely old-school, and not everyone is into his music and clothes, but he IS a great skier, and a truly nice guy. Despite his fame, he moves among “normal” people and genuinely appreciates their attention. He’s a role model to a lot of people around here, especially among those where you would not expect it. The guy is class.

His style is the dream of our youth (60s)! However, how he looks like McGlashen when writes his short turns! Only the stand of his body is higher. Many thanks for video. And what do You think about Toni Sailer & J.-C. Killy?

Love it. What great ideas you always have! My mother loves him (not for skiing) ;-)

Fantastic!
Hansi demonstrates effortless balance and anticipation regardless of the terrain. Even though the feet appear to be glued together, Hansi has leg independence with early edge to the outside ski. Can't really master that type of dynamic skiing without a racing background.
