Recorded 19 April 2017 at the Alan Cristea Gallery, London

A public discussion led by broadcaster and journalist Andrew Marr, author and art critic Martin Gayford, David Cleaton-Roberts of the Alan Cristea Gallery, and chaired by Helen Waters, also of the Alan Cristea Gallery, to celebrate the launch of a monograph on Gillian Ayres RA CBE (b. 1930), one of Britain’s most respected and best-loved post-war artists and a pioneer of abstract painting.

In March 2017 book publishers Art/ Books, in conjunction with the Alan Cristea Gallery, published the definitive monograph on Ayres, spanning her six-decade long career. Featuring over 400 pages, and 200 illustrations, it includes a foreword by Andrew Marr, and texts by Martin Gayford and David Cleaton-Roberts. It is the first major publication on the artist’s life and work in more than fifteen years.

The Alan Cristea Gallery represents Gillian Ayres for her paintings and is the exclusive publisher and distributor of her original prints.

She was a painting genius, incredibly eloquent and free and full of vitality. What she is doing on the canvas is an equivalent of playing chess a master level or solving complex math. And it was all intuitive. Crazy! I mean, everybody knows who De Kooning and Pollock are, and she took it much further... Thank you for the video.
