If the idea of squeezing through tight passageways and tunnels, scrambling over rocks, and spelunking appeals to you, you’ll love the 💀Chasm of Doom in 🌵Joshua Tree National Park, California!
💾Save this post for planning your next trip there!
❓️The Chasm of Doom is a large mountain of boulders in the Hidden Valley area of Joshua Tree National Park that has a mysterious path through cracks and crevices to explore.
⚠️It is not an official “hike”, so it is not labeled on any maps, there are no “trail” markers, and it can be tricky to find. It is easily accessed from the Hidden Valley trail parking lot, and part of the fun is finding the entrance to the Chasm of Doom on your own!
🤦🏼♀️🤦♂️We’re bummed that we forgot our headlamps and didn’t take any photos or videos of the darkest tightest spots (search “the coffin”), so the images and videos in this reel are not representative of what a lot of the Chasm of Doom is like. There are a lot of great “walk through” videos out there if you want to know what you’re getting yourself into, or you can Indiana Jones🐍 it on your own (though we do recommend going with a buddy👫).
We also recommend:
👀Doing some research ahead of time to make sure you know what the entrance looks like.
👖Wearing long pants/sleeves that you don't mind getting dirty or scuffed up (the granite rocks are rough and may scrape up your skin and clothes when going through the narrow areas).
🔦Bringing headlamps.
🚫Not bringing a backpack (will likely not fit through some of the tighter spaces).
⭐️This may not be an adventure for you if you are claustrophobic, but we did appreciate that the path intermittently changes from very tight, narrow, dark spaces to bright, wide open areas where you can stand up and catch your breath.
💬Does this sound fun to you or would you pass?
