A good selection, but I would like to recommend a couple of other foreign authors who have somewhat shorter, but dense, books. These are two Austrians Stefan Zweig and Arthur Schnitzler. Zweig was the best selling author of his time the 1920's.

Yes. I've read some of those. The last Gatsby - the one in which DiCaprio starred - did the Plaza ice scene very well, as well as the huge parties. I only wish their rendition of Rhapsody in Blue was longer.

Wow you explain the books really well, but without giving anything away! Thank you! Love it ❤

Have read all of your recommendations except Morrison, who I am avoiding after hating Song of Solomon. Think you have done a good job with recommendations. I think most people will like reading your suggestions.

What a great list! I’ve yet to try Gatsby and that’s one I really want to read!

I totally agree with EM Foster's Room With A View. I felt as though I was there alongside the characters on the road, in the woods, riding in the carriage across the countryside. BUT I found the ending to be disappointing. I expected so much more. I had looked forward some form of a love confession or even a description of Lucy's travel to her true love. What activities were he engaged in at the time she found him. What was the reception, reaction- SOMETHING. I was very disappointed to say the least. In my opinion, that should have been the climax or at least part of it. Ugghhh I get irritated everytime I think of it.

I absolutely love The Age of Innocence but I really don’t think it’s the best place to start with Edith Wharton, she works in subtleties and especially in this novel to the point that half the plot happens behind the scenes and half the enjoyment is rereading it and putting the pieces together. People who start with The Age of Innocence can be turned off of reading Edith Wharton if they don’t know this going in, so I’d recommend starting with something like Custom of the Country and The House of Mirth.

Great recs! I have a few on this list, and specifically have Middlemarch, and I am tempted to lug it with me on holiday next month - it's a chonker so she'll keep me busy for the week I'm away I think! I've already read the first 100 pages but put it down. I have a bind up of Edith Warton's books - the three New York novels - that's another one tempting me! I also want to take Anna Karenina! I know that I want at least one chonky classic with me, and honestly can't decide. Choices, choices...

Loved great gatsby but I don’t ever want to see it again lol I had to “read” it four different times in high school due to moving and attending 4 different ones in different years
