This Robot Burns 5,000 Weeds Per Minute

This massive machine is burning weeds with LASERS. 5,000 a minute! The reason it’s so cool is it lets farmers use fewer herbicides to grow your food.
But in order to do it…

Farming is changing, and we just made a longer video all about it!

Hiya! Employee of Carbon here. I'm happy that everyone is so excited about our product -- but I wanted to clarify that you do NOT need to do an initial pass over your field before weeding. As you drive we both detect the weeds and shoot them in ONE single pass. (pew-pew!)

Also -- we only use lasers. Any other mechanical weeding systems are completely separate companies and will not utilize the Laserweeder's weed detections.

I remember as a kid, weeding our entire front hill of our property, wishing someone would just invent this exact thing.

No but this would be huge. Idk if y'all understand how expensive herbicides are, but being able to do this could save millions in the long run and also help different organisms and animals, like bees, still thrive

It’s an advanced version of Michael Reeve’s tomato killing spike😂

Its some what comforting, knowing advanced technology is being used for more worth while things than war.

You know it’s a good robot when it destroys drugs for a living…

*Wait-*

This looks really cool and high tech! Then again, as a farmer's daughter I can tell you there certainly are weed species out there that the laser treatment is no more than a tickle to, much less that boop.

We use a similar system on the railway. I was on a team that worked on it in 2010. It was purely a herbicide spot applicator back then, but has progressed to a laser for some builds now. It's a lot faster because it doesn't need computer vision, just a sensor. It uses a monochromatic red laser that is absorbed really well by foliage (and paper.) and the sensors register all dark spots as weeds.
Very narrow focal distance, so it sprays gaps in the ballast if they're too deep etc...
But with some work, won't spray wood sleepers :-)
Operating speed up to 30mph.

Priot to this, we blanket sprayed everything. So it was a greater than 99% savings when this came out.

Only for the 4-foot area though. Not enough range for the wider sections, they're still manual.

Imagine the weeds begin evolving to look more like crops to survive

_First the Terminators came for the weeds, then they came for us._ 😆

Laser is better, since the ash would fertilize the soil, and the booper has the risk of the plants just growing new roots (i think)

But what if I like pessimistic science and tech stories?

Imagine waking up on this farm forgetting you just set this up and wearing your favourite green shorts.
