I live out in the country in central Alabama. I have a decent size garden with fourteen raised beds of varying sizes, three GreenStalk towers, three pots for spearmint and peppermint, a 10’x20’ inground herb garden, eighteen ten-gallon grow bags, a mound of straw for growing Wine Cap mushrooms, and a small orchard with eight fruit trees.
Three of my raised beds, 2’x8’ are used primarily for tomatoes and bunching onions. I am growing a mix of semi-determinant, indeterminant, and determinate tomatoes. I space them out two feet apart.
I’ve moved most of my peppers to GreenStalk towers. Each five-tier tower has thirty pockets. I am growing peppers in two of them (The Twin Towers of Peppers), so sixty plants in about four square feet of ground space. From my experience, they do as well in the towers as my raised beds, occupy less space so I can grow more in my raised beds, but need a little additional fertilization throughout the season.
The GreenStalks are definitely worth the investment, and can be used to grow a large variety of plants. I have a third tower that is a seven tier tower with forty-two pockets that are being used to grow Seascape Strawberries. Yeah, forty-two strawberry plants in two square feet of ground space.

I overdid it in my 12'3'1 bed. It's a freaking jungle right now 😂😂. I also mislabeled a Barry's crazy cherry and he is being the aggressive booger he is in the midst of my over crowding. Tomatoes are everywhere, I'm here for the chaos🎉🎉
Do better folks 😂 ps iam not a newbie just made crazy choices 😜.

I grow 3 rows of peppers in my 8x4 raised bed and comfortably grow 12-15 pepper plants. I think you could easily put another row of peppers in your raised bed. For tomatoes I will plant 5 indeterminate tomatoes in a single row in an 8x4 raised bed (single stem on string trellis) and 4 determinate tomatoes in a single row. I have found 4 determinate tomatoes will comfortably fill out that row. I could probably put in one more but then disease tends to hit them sooner due to lack of air circulation.

I got a couple different sizes of raised beds, 4x4 and 4x12. I have cattle panels cut in half and placed vertical supported by t-posts just on one side of those beds (on the 12ft side of the big bed). I only plant 2 tomatoes in my 4x4 beds because that’s all it can handle. I even position them close to the edge. I always plant the cherry tomatoes on an outside edge because they are the plants that always grow crazy big. On my 4x12 bed I plant 3 tomatoes and then grow 2 Small Wonder spaghetti squash between them.

So the peppers are a whole other ball game…. Several years ago Gary from The Rusted Garden mentioned you could easily plant two peppers to a hole. So I started doing that. No issues and very prolific. Also plant 1 ft apart. I cut bamboo stakes in about 2ft lengths and put 3 around the plant to help support them. Now I just go ahead and put two seeds per cell when I start my plants and let them both grow together in the same cell until I’m ready to plant out. As long as they are fed enough they will grow just fine. I always throw in a bit of Epsoma vegetable tone in the planting hole and then maybe 3 more times during the summer, usually the 1st and 2nd application is about 1 month apart. Occasionally some fish fertilizer. I emphasize on fertilizing heavy at planting and the first few weeks and back off. I learned that they only needed the heavy fertilizer until they get established and putting in that first round of fruit to prevent any blossom end rot. If the first round is good then I’m good the rest of the season and can start backing off. Not quite scientific, but I figured out that’s works for me. No drip tape here, all hand watering 😊

Yep, your tomato math matches mine! I'll be transplanting eight tomato plants into my 4x8 bed just as soon as my climate catches up with yours (so in about a month).

I wouldn't say I'm a seasoned raised bed gardener lol but I went 8 per bed for both maters and peppers. So far so good

With the intense power of the sun nowadays I crowd my tomatoes more than in years past so they tend to shade each other I do keep the bottom of the plants open for good ventilation and had a very good result last year. With the changes in the intensity of the sun we will have to learn to adapt and accept the fact that things are different now and it’s time to experiment and adapt to harsher conditions that we will continue to experience. I really enjoy your content and I have learned a lot from your work. Thanks

I had success with 6 indeterminate tomatoes in a 3 1/2' x 5' raised bed last year. This year I have 16 pepper plants in the same size bed. Take those tomato cages and lay them horizontal and let your peppers grow through the holes of the cages for support.

Travis. You are going to think I’m crazy, but I have 30 Jalapeño and Banana plants in a 4x8 raised bed. Feed them lots of Agrothrive. Works fantastic. Been doing it like this for five years. It does make it a little challenging to harvest, but plants produce until frost. North Central Alabama.

I was trying to decide if I should go with 1 ft. or 2 ft. spacing with my peppers on drip with the Florida weave. This just made the decision easy. 1 ft. it is! Thanks!

That is my favorite plant the peppers all kinds, all kinds of peppers, jalapeño habanero, poblano everything…
I overwintered three so they’re already producing because they’re overwintered so I put them out there and we’re getting good sun and rain here in Texas so they are already popping up with bell pepper plants. You know the fruit.

Depends on whether it's for serious harvest or fresh eating! 12" staggered pattern or allow 18" per plant for tomatoes and peppers. Eggplant do well @ 18". Found one plant per 10 gal or greater container, can push 5 gal buckets with daily watering with good results. I like easy work

I planted 16 in a 4 x 12 bed. So 32 in all. They did great.

In my 10x2.5’ bed I grow 10 indeterminate tomatoes that I grow mostly single stem up a string, with a cattle panel trellis behind it for support of those additional stems that I miss, 8-10 peppers along the squares in front of the tomatoes, Marigolds along the front of the whole bed and in between in plant in some basil, rosemary, thyme and bush beans. And they grow most happily between early May thru the end of October and some into early November. I live in the suburbs of Philadelphia and grow in my backyard and water with a watering can from my rain barrel or with my hose.

I’m doing Florida weave so in 4’ x 8’ beds, two rows, 4 each row of tomatoes. Peppers, two rows of six each row, Florida weave. I’ll probably tuck in some basil too.

I off centre my rows, lets you squish in a couple more than you usually would 👍
