Today we talk about another rule from Dokkodo by Miyamoto Musashi, which has a common ground with the stoic philosophy Memento Mori (Marcus Aurelius, Seneca). We talk about how thinking too much about oneself could be harmful and how humility can be a source of strength.

"For this intellect has no further mission that would lead beyond human life. It is human, rather, and only its owner and producer gives it such importance, as if the world pivoted around it. But if we could communicate with the mosquito, then we would learn that it floats through the air with the same self-importance, feeling within itself the flying center of the world." - Nietzsche

True immortality doesn't need to be remembered being fully Self-luminous, is eternal life!

Humility leads to success, the more humility you have the more carrying capacity you will have for what you do.

I used to think I was humble because I had low self esteem and was quiet and not arrogant. Wrong! Humility means accepting that you are not always right, the world an those who disagree wrong! Humility is doing a job you are probably to good for, and being kind to those who may not be as good or fortunate as you. Humility is all about putting yourself at the feet of God and apologizing for being self serving and haughty.

The whole paradox is that you can't behave like you have no ego. Letting go of the illusion of control, and trying to strive toward what you're describing is counterproductive, and does the opposite. It is not in our nature. Let nature does its thing, and accept it the way it is. Giving yourself reasons, and ideas of how to make life bearable is what you will do, regardless of knowing that you don't have to do it. It's a battle that you can't win or influence. Valhalla is a good reference to it. It's a fight that never stops. The matter itself dissolves when you accept that it's a part of you, and not something to be tempered. We are not here to change anything, we are the whole thing, in its entirety.

It's Not A Philosophy Its A Element Of Miyamoto Musashi's lifestyle And it is True that moe less you Think About Your Self The More You can Feel This Beautiful World. And That Is the Best Pill For Depression.

I totally agree with this. Many people are depressed because they consider themselves deeply. They expects too many things from the world.

My jiu-jutsu coach says this amazing thing from time to time: 'I don't take myself too seriously, but I take what I do very seriously'.
Very similar to this rule, I think.
Great videos, thank you so much! 💓😊

I believe I went down the hardest path one could possibly choose for dealing with their mental health. Constant misunderstandings, the feeling of being foreign, and pettiness ruled my day. I started pursuing my thoughts, actively hunting them down to ward them off. It wasn't until I had a break that nearly cost me my life that I understood a lesson of the Tao: the more you pursue, the more you are evaded. I let the thoughts come and banish them piecemeal, and I foster gratitude and an inner peace by not going on a mental offensive.

My disagreement is that you cannot understand the world if you don't understand yourself, and both are ever-changing. You must think of yourself if you care to think of the world; humility does not come from ignorance of yourself, but rather understanding and accurate assessment. It is vain to be selfish, but it also vain to neglect the self. The key to strength is virtue, and virtue can be gained through the praxis of moderation. Pouring with a heavy hand is bound to spill, so why not give it some slack? Surely you get tired of clenching a muscle, yes?

Love yourself, then love the world. Even if it means putting everything on the table, risking it all, love your life. Wake up and shout it to the heavens: "I WANT TO LIVE!"

“ The angels fly because they take themselves lightly”
Heard this quote from Alan Watts, I think from a lecture about Taoism, or Zen Buddhism. Thought I might just share it, specially because I know that miyamoto musashi was a great buddhist himself
