Why Red Bull’s rivals looked so bad in F1 2024 opener

For all the fighting talk from Ferrari, Mercedes, McLaren and Aston Martin over the winter, Red Bull and Max Verstappen still ground them into dust in the first race of 2024.
We expected Red Bull, and Verstappen in particular, to be very strong in Bahrain. And they were. But they were also made to look even better by just how BAD their rivals were.

The Race should rewatch the last soft tire stint from the Red Bulls. Aside from the blitz-lap from max at the beginning of the stint, both guys were just cruising around, not trying to take life out of the softs. Max could have been 40 sec in front of Sainz if he wanted to.

Lots of optimistic calculations by pundits and other teams about how they are actually closer than the 20 second gap to Max. Forgetting that Max already had more or less that gap after two stints, and only used the final stint to do a qualifying run to secure fastest lap. After that he needed some cooling down laps in which he lost a lot of time, and then he just casually brought the car home. Plus the tire strategy was focused on mitigating risks, not on running the fastest over a whole race distance. Add to that that he probably also had some pace in hand, lus his remarks that he felt completely atone with the car, and the conclusions should be a lot bleaker.

It wouldn't have mattered if leclerc qualified 1st, as he locked up on so many laps and got passed by even his teammate. Verstappen would have done the same, no doubt.

In terms of Mclaren, it's all pretty much unknown for them until we get to around Austria to compare similar based cars. Their early 23 car was so poor that comparing the two for the first third of the season is pretty pointless when compared to most other teams.
