I've been in the indie scene since 2011. I published my first romance novel in 2014 (Weak for Him). Under Kennedy Fox, we've made USA Today 4 times since 2017. With Lyra Parish, I've made top 100 several times on Amazon.

My main reason for thinking I want a pen name is that I had to spell both my first and last names all through school. When I got married, it didn't change. I just have to spell a new last name. I always longed for a name that people could spell without my help.

I personally think the majority of authors should use pen names for privacy purposes. Mixing personal and professional lives can be a sticky situation. These are great examples as to why. I agree with them. I also think that Pen Names as whole can give you better exposure if you pick the right one. People are going to notice more unique names vs your standard, as you put it, John Smith. Nice vid.

I'd like to write a personal memoir about my childhood health challenges. I have a fairly common Biblical first name, not famous or weird, thankfully. My married surname, on the other hand, can be difficult for some people to remember, spell and say. I don't find it difficult, but others seem to, so I don't want to use it. I thought I might have better luck with my maiden name, since, it's alliterative and easy to remember. Additionally, I had a small measure of fame as a child, due to my experiences, so, my maiden name is well known to 1 of my target markets. Unfortunately, there's already another author using that name, with the same exact spelling. Should I just publish it under my studio name? (1 Blue Eye Creative Studio) Do you have any advice?

Lol I know what you meant, but the line about protecting kids from books "with language" made me laugh

The branding tip was really great! I use a pen name, but mostly because I basically hate my first name 😂

I do use a pen name! It's Clover S. Laurel. I don't think I write anything that would make people disapprove. I just like how the name fits with the themes of my writing (nature, grief, etc.) Plus, I've been going by Clover since I was 16, so it's become natural to me.

This candid and intriguing feature of 5 Reasons Why You Should Use A Pen Name via The Courtney Project youtube channel definitely helps me logically and intuitively understand the option to go ahead and utilize a penname, I was already leaning towards the penname option and this youtube video helps confirm the penname decision especially for the reason that a writer may want to keep their options open towards eventually writing for more than one age audience.

This is a really helpful video, thanks for making it! I made an Authortube under my pen name because I'm still in school. This is really helpful!

A pen name is necessary if you’ve previously been harassed, or even “cancelled” online and are trying to move on from past issues that could taint your reputation as an author

I'm considering using a pen name because I wanna write for kids, but some of my ideas are for younger kids than others. My passion project is more geared towards tweens, but I also have plans for picture books for younger kids. Older kids and teens generally don't want to be caught reading "baby stuff" so I'm considering using a pen name for the picture books so as not to scare them off. Is that a good idea and if so, how should I go about it?

Thanks for information 👍I really want to use pen name because of my parents and colleagues. Is it really possible that our book can work with our pen name only I mean I don't have problem with starting from scratch, it's only hiding my real name. Are there any YA authors using pen names ?

I haven't used a pen name so far. I never needed to, and my name, although it looks special in any foreign country, is one of the most common ones here :D Popescu is the most popular (or second most popular) surname and I literally have three other friends called Alina. I did have to think of two pen names for some future projects. One's for serial killer and pretty gory mysteries, the other for YA. So... yeah, might not have mixed well with urban fantasy or with LGBT fiction and romance :P My reasons were purely marketing driven, but I think it was a smart thing to do, rather than lump it all under the same name.

Reader: "You write porn!?"

Writer: "No, my pen name does that."

I just want to be anonymous. My pen name is Y.S. Canab. Y.S. for my name and middle name. And the name of my grandmother.

What if someone wrote a book about their own childhood trauma? Could that be a reason to use a pen name? Some content might be misunderstood, unappreciated, upsetting, or as yet undisclosed information to family members or friends. It could also be a safety net, if there's an abuser mentioned in the book who's still breathing air. Hell, change ALL the names, including yours. It might offer some protection & anonymity in a situation like that.
