I'm 48 years old now and never knew about spice until the new shows and or didn't pay attention to those small details....damn 40 years of live have passed and I just now in Feb 2022 just found what spice was in the star wars universe. I did understand and hear about it in the Bad Batch. lol

Makes Sense. It can be used for different things and since The Pike Syndicate Controlled it, they had all the power since it was in high demand. As long as they had all the Spice, they would always make credits.

Star Wars is not the only Interstellar themed franchise to use spice. A movie called Dune and a video game called Spore also use spice for trading and a form of currency.
