My father was an industrial manufacturing engineer back in the mid-20th century. He wore bow ties on days when he would inspect the production line. It was a safety measure. A long necktie could get caught in the machinery. He taught me how to tie a bow tie when I was a teenager. He said a mark of a gentleman was knowing how to tie a bow tie. I enjoy wearing bow ties and when someone compliments me I like to tell that story.

I wear bow ties often. Where I work, some of us do "bow tie Tuesdays". My wife actually prefers me in a bow tie than a traditional necktie.

Great advice. One thing I would add. Practice with an old cheap bow tie when you are not under pressure. Most young men find they are going to a formal black tie dinner, get a dinner suit and then horror of horrors end up trying to tie a nice silk bow tie and hour before they going out.

There is a crucial missing step here. You MUST make sure when you thread the long end through the hole that you insert the pointed /Diamond end of the bow so it’s opposite from the pointed end on the shorter bow. Loop end opposite loop end and point end opposite point end. Don’t have point end lined up with pointed end or bow won’t tighten.

This is actually the method I trained myself with originally years ago watching YouTube videos for hours and practicing in the mirror. However, if not done often enough, it can be forgotten to which you'll spend an eternity in the mirror. Best way I create for myself was what I call the "shoestring method". Think of how you tie your laces, bunny ears first. Done in less than 30 seconds. Good video.😎

This is incredibly helpful, but I have one question. I’ve tied my bow tie many times and I’ve slowly gotten better at it. One thing I can’t get, is making the knot in the center smooth. In your video, you can see the middle is a little bent, like mine. But when you switch to the front shot, it’s suddenly smoothed out. How do you achieve that?
