I deeply agree with you.
I used to tape up toms and damp my snare, but I realized once I started playing and learning music seriously that learning how to tune your drums and getting you're desired sound without muffling is crucial.
I'm not the best drummer ever, but this needs to be passed on to more people.

Or, instead of bashing, how about a tuning demonstration.? This is pompous and makes you seem arrogant.

Agreed. Bad advice. Don't start with the goal of using tape in the end. Experiment with different tensions and head configurations, different tones on top and bottom head, etc. FIRST. Then start adding a little dampening of you still want a more dampened sound.
It's ok to add tape of it gets the sound you want, but don't start out with the goal of using it, maybe you'll get there and not need to choke out the natural sound of the drums, or not.

I mean even with proper tuning some people just prefer a more muffled sound. Sure you can tune your reso head higher than your batter which will effectively shorten sustain, but still won’t give you that “thud” like on some vintage 70s records.

That being said, there are better solutions than tape. Moon gels, tea towels, those drum cake things, internal mufflers, etc etc.

I just got my first drumset how do I get all of my drums to stop ringing? I have a Ludwig Quest love Pocket Kit if that helps

Sometimes tape is tuning it right. To create sounddesign.

Incorrect some drums just have overtones doesn't matter how you tune them

I am with you, but when you are using heads with no dampening you can use tape or something like that, but first you have to freaking tune it right 👍

I understand but im not agree. I think that you can no use it, but sometimes you only can get the sound that you want with dampening and muffling. It is important to say the Sound that you want.

This is bad advice.

If you used tape and it sounds good to you.... THEN IT SOUNDS GOOD! Crazy right?! Break the rules kids.
There are also some sounds you cannot get without dampening and tape. Everyone has a different ideal sound, and everyone should search for different ways to get to that ideal sound.

If we Shouldn’t use tape then why do Professionals us tape and Moon gel?

You never had a mic stand swung at your head by the front of house engineer or the studio producer have you?

You say this but then don’t give an example

“Pro tip” smh 🤦🏼‍♂️ this is such a limiting way of thinking and completely disregards other potential sounds. Tell this to the top session players in the industry and watch them laugh at you as they put gaff tape on their drums to record a John Mayer record. While I agree it’s not a substitute for good tuning, sometimes the song or the vibe doesn’t call for wide open drums. Producers/engineers don’t care if you’re using tape or moongels or a queen sized mattress or whatever the fuck else you’re using to get the sound that is needed. It’s all just sounds. Now, that might be “your sound” and that’s perfectly fine if that’s what makes you happy. But drums are not a one size fits all. Music gets a lot more interesting when you think in terms of achieving sounds vs your perceived idea of “what should be”.
