If you’re wondering how this trick works, it works because Binary does.
In binary, numbers are represented by 1s and 0s. 0 is represented as 0, 1 is represented as 1, but since we can’t put in a 2, we move it to the 2’s place, which is to the left of the 1s place. 2 is represented as a 10, 3 is just a 11 ((2x1)+ (1x1)) and 4 is 100 ((4*1)+(2*0)+(1*0)
The numbers on the top right of each slide are 1, 2, 4, 8 and 16. The other numbers in binary have the number of the top right as a 1. Like, if you chose 9, it would appear on the cards that have a 1 and an 8, as in binary, 9 is 1001 ((8*1)+(4*0)+(2*0)+(1*1)). As the only numbers there which were multiplied by 1 were 8 and 1, 9 would appear on the 8 and 1 slide.

Came back to this after implementing a little test for hamming codes, remembered about this from my GCSE Computer Science taster where we’d do this trick on parents and transitioning (from primary to secondary school) kids, so the reason why hamming codes reminded me of this makes so much more sense after now picking it apart years later lmao
