The ol' mushroom air intake is a part that leaves a TON of people confused. So let's talk about just what the heck it is, who made it, and why some people don't like the HKS Air Intake

The mushroom air intake may not be worth it, BUT IT'S COOOL, until it breaks apart and detonates my engine.

The flow rate of these are really good but don't forget you have to replace the filter element roughly at the same interval you change your oil. Some people dont read the packaging and leave them on for far too long and then complain about the filtration 😅

ONLY 150 bucks? Man we value money very differently sir. My filter, that works just as well i might add, was 30 bucks.

I really want one for my R32 but I also have a hard time rationalizing dropping $150+ on a damn air filter

Here in Japan they call it the “mushroom of death” because some people have reported that when they get old they’ll get sucked into their turbo and destroy the motor. Not sure how true it is but it’s funny!😂

I remember reading Import tuner as a kid and building a bunch of cars on paper with all the parts i wanted. There was a red 99 civic hatchback on my street back around the year 2000, basically new condition, and id always ride my bicycle past it just to look at it and imagine buying it off the guy as a 10 year old lol. Seeing this HKS filter brought me back to those days just now.

I remember strapping the Edelbrock Pro-Flo on cars years ago which is essentially the same system but mildly triangular. HKS drops the same thing but fully round and marketed to JDM and it’s an original thought. It’s a fine dry filter design, but any properly sized filter will feed any engine enough air; it’s not a part that really realizes any power gain by piddling over the type of filter used; the only difference once the filter is passing the required CFM will be actual particulate filtration. Choose a properly CFM rated filter with the best particulate rating you can fit in the space available, and place it with access to clean, cool air. Job done.

i have always wanted to put a foam air filter on my car, one that will crumble over time and end up going down the intake. its what ive always wanted.

Oiled air filters are dogshit. They gum up MAF sensors, they are messy as hell, and they are a pain in the ass to clean. Dry filters are the way to go.

I’m not sure if HKS mushrooms were part of the test, but I read a study where, among K&N and AEM as well as many other long time contemporaries in the aftermarket filtration market, AEM’s DryFlow cones actually restricted the most airflow in the aftermarket category, being decently close to OEM. That translates to a lot of filtration.

I don’t recall the paper’s name but I did research on the filtration efficacy of K&N and AEM specifically and came across interesting data.

For anyone wondering, the name is an HKS Super Power Flow. The kits really aren’t $1000, at least not until you get into the more complicated things. A filter and a regular kit doesn’t go for a whole whole lot. For instance, one for my Acura RSX goes for ~$200 (with piping).

i absolutely adore mushroom filters, they look kinda retro.

These are meant for track use only, they barely filter anything even when the filter is changed frequently. Also even without oiling they disintegrate and get sucked into the engine.

I bonded with my 79 MGB while replacing the ignition switch the first year i had it. Had to cut rivets into sheer bolts and torque em out by hand. Lots of fun! It's getting the engine rebuilt now, and I picked up a lightwieght flywheel and new clutch for it. Its gonna be sweet when done.
