About this violin masterclass:
Violin Sonata No.1 in G minor by Johann Sebastian Bach
0:00 Intro and playing part from @aijiali8307
3:37 Advice part from Ning Feng
In this masterclass, Professor Ning Feng is accompanied by young violin student Aijia Li who will be interpreting the first Bach's Sonata (No. 1 in G minor, BWV 1001). She will specifically play the last two parts, Siciliana and Presto, taken from a set of six works composed by Johann Sebastian Bach. These are often referred to in English as the "sonatas and partitas for solo violin". Professor Ning Feng listens to her interpretation very carefully and proceeds to congratulate her and to share a few adjustments she can make. He very much appreciates her tempo and her way of dancing with the music, however her emotion cannot overshadow what is expressed by Bach in this specific piece. There is a natural path within this movement that personal emotion can lead off of. It then becomes difficult to understand the annotations or any other specifications or mentions by the composer. Feng reminds us how necessary it is to take a step back and make sure one's understanding of the composition is not clouded by emotional judgement.
What we learn:
- Staying focused,
- Understanding subtle changes implied from annotations such as pochissimo,
- How to achieve a more natural sound,
- Articulation for a smoother result,
- How to avoid repeating certain patterns.
