Just got back from Japan. Google maps and google translate were wonderful. Google translate allowed us to read signs, food ingredients, menus, and to converse with friends from Japan who only spoke Japanese. Made our trip that much more enjoyable!

Just got back from Japan. Thank you so much for telling us about the Go app. We used it in Tokyo and Hiroshima in particular because our hotel was pretty far from everything. I will use the Go app next time! I was in disbelief when Google would give me transit directions in Tokyo for a 50 minute journey and driving was only 20 minutes. I didn't immediately realize that I was looking at a 10 minute walk, 30 minute train and another 10 minute walk so I doubted it could be so quick to drive in Tokyo. And I suspect Google wasn't accounting for all the time getting in and out of the stations and finding platforms. I figured Uber would just add a fee to the cost of the taxi so I didn't want to use that app. Getting a price estimate would have made for informed choices too. Would have used trains most of the time anyway, but it's nice to have options.

Im in Japan right now and used Uber quite a lot. It appears to be linked to the local taxi service much like how you described Go.
