Pancreatitis in 10 minutes!

Learn about pancreatitis, the role of pancreatic/digestive enzymes in pancreatitis, nursing care, and complications of pancreatitis. A case study is used to give you an idea of what to expect, what to watch out for, and what needs to be done for a patient with acute pancreatitis.

1:05 Islets of Langerhans- Cells throughout the pancreas that secrete endocrine hormones (insulin, glucogon) into the bloodstream
1:43 Lipase- Enzyme released by the pancreas that digests fats (triglycerides). By-products include glycerol and fatty acids. This process is called lipolysis.
2:07 Trypsin- A type of protease- protein digesting enzyme from the pancreas.
2:16 Elastase- A type of protease- protein digesting enzyme.
2:28 Kallikrein- A type of protease- protein digesting enzyme.
3:27 Gallstones- Stones that sometimes form in the gallbladder and can travel through the bile duct. Also called CHOLElithiasis. CHOLE= gallbladder. Ex: CHOLEcystectomy= gallbladder removal.
3:56 Boring pain- Pain that feels like it is going through the body
5:22 Grey Turners and Cullen’s sign- grey-blue areas in the flank and around the belly button caused by leakage of pancreatic enzymes into the tissue near the skin
5:46 Amylase- Enzyme released by the pancreas that digests starch into simple sugars.
6:05 Bilirubin- By-product of the breakdown of hemoglobin by the liver- normally excreted with bile.
8:30 Steatorrhea- Foul smelling, frothy, fatty stool. Occurs with decreased lipase secretion.
