Tawarau Falls

The loop track includes a 2km walk along the gravel road. For example, we parked our car at a junction, walked a couple hundred meters to the official car park (we walked there because it was too boggy for the car) and started the walk... crossed the stream 3 times (no bridges so you will get wet)... came across an awesome moss covered limestone river bed, then not far past that was the falls... continued on to the junction where you can head to the double falls, we walked for about 25 minutes in, but decided to come back... finally made it out of the bush and arrived at a totally different area than where we had entered about 5 hours earlier (we stopped a lot)..with room for a couple of cars to park and with a sign saying Appletree Rd... so we headed left.. and eventually came back to the car. This would be a good place to park if you intend to go to Double Falls and/or you want to visit Tawarau Falls without having to cross the stream a few times.

Wow, those mushroom shots turned out awesome, great phone you have. Oh man, now I wish I had left that footage of us getting stuck on the road to show what you described here (I had about 100 minutes of footage to pick from, hahaha). This video goes quite nicely with mine in that your is more instructional and full of directions and tips for hikers. Mine is more just the entertainment side of it, hahaha! I think I will make a playlist of our walks so far.

Just returned from there. Anyone contemplating using a 2 wheel drive should carry a tow rope and spade. If 2 cars are travelling in opposite directions along that narrow, potholed, Appletree Road, one or both can end up stuck, trying to pass one another. If that happens, and another vehicle arrives, and nobody has a tow rope, it'll be a circus. When you encounter a bog hole, like the one shown just before the loop carpark, fill it in using the spade or use dry vegetation. Easier to do that than to wait until you're stuck to get your spare out, and your knees dirty. 4X4 saves all that trauma.
The third river crossing before the falls is avoidable at the moment. Walk fifty metres past the crossing point to where a dead tree has fallen across the river. Someone has been clearing fallen trees across the track with a chainsaw. Simply dropping a small totara across the river, near the first 2 crossings, would make the walk far easier. No need for wet feet. If I ever return, then it might mysteriously happen.
