Having one of the most applauded rock guitarists as your father apparently still isn't enough to get you into rock music. Mark Tremonti talks about how his kids and their friends arent' really fans of rock music, dispite some of his attempts to convert them.

Clem knows what's up, he's a smart kid for getting that free Tremonti gear. I love that Speed metal is the "Dad" music that Mark's kids have to listen to as well.

That's kinda sad, I'm 19 yo and yeah, our generation is not focused on good music, and I'm talking about music in general, classical, rock, metal, jazz, nothing deeper and full of essence.
Sure, this is a general statement and there are afew kids that know what great music is.
He's so cool by the way. And Tremonti's new album is a killer imo.

Yeah, it's kind nuts, rock was still popular if you were Gen X so even if you were listening to different bands, it was still within the realm of rock. Ditto for millennials though to a lesser extent. We had the post-punk revival but rock really took a dive, coinciding with the financial crash of 2008. It seems like people just aren't open minded about anything outside of the mainstream, that's across the board, not just young people. I remember growing up, I would at least give bands a chance that might predate me like Pink Floyd, then grow to love them. It could sometimes take effort but the payoff was there. People nowadays just don't want to know. I'd almost feel apologetic for taking out a guitar or even seeing people perform at sports events, because there seems to be an underlying disdain for it now, which is a total shame. perform a rock number at sports events, because there seems to be an underlying disdain for it now, which is a total shame. Hopefully things will one day turn around, I think it's also dependent on what labels push, for the past decade and a half, it's been hip hop, electronica and pop, definitely not rock. If there was more support for rock bands and artists from big labels and the media, the public perception would be more favourable.

It is kinda sad how these days, kids today generally seem to be less accepting of older music. With pop music, it's all about whats cool at the time, whereas with rock and metal fans, they tend to appreciate the older stuff as classics and I think they are generally more open minded (unless of course they're one of those "all about the image" types.

I see kids as young as ten wearing AC/DC and Iron Maiden t-shirts. Rock bands that have been around for that long have a huge age range of fans, whereas a typical fanbase of a pop band is pretty much of a specific age group. For example, a friend went to an S CLUB 7 reunion gig a few years ago, and she told me that most of the audience were around their early to mid twenties, so they would have been tweens in the bands heyday, which was their target demographic back then.

When I was growing up, it was all about pop punk and post grunge, but I'm grateful I've been exposed to all kinds of genres.
