Gardening with native plants

There are so many reasons to incorporate native plants into your yard and gardens.

Native plants provide food and habitat for birds, pollinators, and other wildlife.

Deep-rooted trees, shrubs, and prairie plants are drought tolerant, hold the soil in place along slopes and shorelines, and help to break up compacted soil.

And native plants are adapted to your environment - meaning they are most likely to do well in your yard.

In this short video, I talk about the many benefits of gardening with native plants and share advice for how to get started, where to find plants, and how to make native gardens look beautiful throughout the growing season.

Plants shared in this video are native to Minnesota and the upper Midwest.

So awesome! I’m just getting started on transforming my yard to planting tons of Minnesota native plants. It’s cool to see what my seedlings will look like when they grow into mature groupings like yours!

Great. Very Informative. Especially for me. I am in Michigan. Our two states overlap in native species a Great deal. As well as lakes!

Solid advice. I did mine a few hundred square feet per season.

And yay leaves...many of next season's butterflies and moths overwinter in the landscape in various stages of their life cycles.

I’m looking to converting part of my backyard. It gets very hot and sunny and my current concern is it’s being overtaken by ant hills . Like holy moly level. I’m worried about being attacked while digging everything up. Any advice?
