“India has unveiled an ambitious plan to transform itself into a $5 trillion economy over the next five years. For perspective, that would take the second most populous country in the world into third spot after the United States and China.

But it’s not going to be easy, and even the government accepts that. Experts say there are many bottlenecks. The country faces high unemployment, a continuing farm crisis, and rising trade tensions. Growth has been slowing and there are no immediate signs of a turnaround.

But the government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which has presented the first budget of its second term in office, says concerns have been addressed.

We talk to a top industrialist, an independent economist and an entrepreneur to look at the roadmap to achieve this ambitious target, and ask whether the budget can return India to high-trajectory growth.

Presenter: Devina Gupta

Contributors: Vikram Kirloskar, president, Confederation of Indian Industry (CII); Sairee Chahal, founder, SHEROES (a platform for women job seekers); Renu Kohli, independent economist.

From Delhi, #WorklifeIndia reflects on money, work, family and business."

India has more rich people more billionaires and millionaires than japan or UK but it also has more poor people compared to both the countries. And again it has a middle class which is 5 times bigger than entire population of japan or 6 times that of Britain's.
So it is quite confusing to answer whether it will be or won't be a 5 trillion dollar economy.

Christ I often like to think the world has more or less moved past racism but then I come to a BBC comment section...

For all those who are toilet fixated:
Your Neurosis could be treated, but most likely you also have a genetic disorder.
Flawed Genes in humans are common in families with a history of in-breeding.
It was so extensive in the British Monarchy that they could not have cleaned their derriere and dress themselves. Some had to be solitary confined.

It's 3.2 trillion now, and I hope after end of second quarter it will be 3.3 trillion...
4 years 1.8 trillion, we can archive this target soon believe me much before than 2025 💕

India's a great country, it really is. It must be considered a key partner in the maintenance of a liberal global order devoted to human rights. My concern however is that European and American leaders are more interested in maintaining their own hegemony rather than the liberal order. One example of this which provides evidence for my concern is the Trade in Services Agreement, a highly secretive agreement pivoted by the United States and European Union which notably excludes countries like India but does include Pakistan. It's an agreement designed to carve as much as the world as possible for Western influence. This makes me further believe that the desire to maintain Western hegemony doesn't have as much to do with things such as the global upholding of concepts such as human rights as it does with racist and culturally-chauvinist beliefs deeply rooted in Western culture.

Guys countries like Britain, Singapore, America, Japan, China, France had great minds and very hard working people. Of course there was exploitation in the British crown and slavery in America but there’s no point making fun of them now. India’s economy is growing but the per capital income and literacy rate is still very low. We need to work hard and innovate to make our country richer

Why do Indians act like that India is developed and a superpower country. While in reality India is just a little bit better than Africa.
