All of the names except for Damrey, Longwang, Kirogi, Kai-Tak, Bolaven, Chanchu, Jelawat, Ewiniar, and Bilis are used for the first (and only time, in the case of Nesat and Nabi) time since the International list was started in 2000 and after Koinu replaced Tembin from the 2000 season.

After the season, the names Nesat, Nabi, Kirogi, and Kai-Tak are retired from the list. Replacement names are Anis, Doksuri, Akius, and Yun-Yeung for future seasons.

In 2001, PAGASA established 4 new lists that include the English alphabet after discontinuing the old Filipino Alphabet Lists in 2000. The name Unding was previously used on the Filipino Alphabet Lists. The rest of the names are used for the first (and only time, in the case of Julian, Zosimo, Alakdan, Baldo, and Clara) time after the new lists are established in 2001.

After the season, PAGASA retired Julian, Zosimo, Alakdan, Baldo, and Clara from the lists. Replacement names are Joaquin, Zoey, Aura, Bayani, and Corazon for the 2008 season. PAGASA also dropped Unding from the list since it was previously retired in 1977. Replacement name is Ulysses for the 2008 season.

The names Terubok (Ilish fish), Nesat (Sea/ocean in Khmer), Toufa (Peach blossom in Cantonese), Doksuri, Kesani (Goose in North Korean dialect), and Yun-yeung were chosen to replace them, respectively.

All names were used for the first time this year. After 2004, PAGASA retired the names Julian, Zosimo, Alakdan, Baldo, and Clara. It was replaced by Janiuay, Ziggy, Aaron, Bayani, and Cora. PAGASA also dropped Unding from the naming list because it was previously retired in 1977 and was replaced by Ulysses.
