Mysterious Sphere Washes Up on Beach in Japan

Japan has a mystery on its hands. Something washed up on the beach and nobody seems to know where it came from or what it is. Here’s what we do know: The mystery debris is spherical in shape, about five feet in diameter and made of metal because it’s rusting in some spots. The bomb squad was called in to investigate, but reports say an X-ray of the object showed it was hollow and not an immediate threat to public safety. It's a buoy, that's why it is hollow, so the buoy would float on water. It is used on a beach and is connected deep into the sand. I do not know the actual reason for this, but I live near to a beach that has 2 of these buoys. And it is rusting because the paint has come off.

The fact that it is yellow, spherical and hollow, seems pretty obvious that it is a buoy or float. The fact that it has tiedown points also adds to that conclusion.

It's either:

- a wave breaker (to guard against tsunamis)
- an anchor
- a buoy (if it's hollow inside, it's less dense enough to float in the ocean)

Reminds me of the Japanese tale of the sphere that tells of a mystery sphere/ship/ufo that washed up to shore. And a young lady walked out from it holding a book/box.

Well, thank you for mentioning that this object is hollow --- which answers the obvious question of how it was able to float in the first place in order to wash up onto the beach.

This looks like a buoy. It's hollow since it needs to float. They're used to indicate dangers, passageways, and other important indications. It may have washed up on shore since the waves may have been rough. For the piece of string attached, it looks like it was ripped or stripped away from its anchor point. I cannot say this for sure, however, I do feel like this is a buoy.
