Gandalf is caught off guard by Azog, who reveals that Dol Guldur is in fact a secret staging ground for a massive orc army. Gandalf keeps the orcs at bay with his staff and demands to know where their master is, to which Azog replies that "he is everywhere." Gandalf, gravely outnumbered, attempts to escape by casting a spell of blinding light to disorient Azog and brings down a huge section of the fortress wall to prevent the orcs from following him. However, as he reaches the entrance the Necromancer appears as a massive incorporeal being of dark energy.

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug premiered on 2 December 2013 in Los Angeles and was released internationally on 11 December 2013 in both conventional and IMAX theatres. The film received mostly positive reviews and has grossed over $958 million at the worldwide box office, surpassing both The Fellowship of the Ring and The Two Towers, making it the fourth highest-grossing film of 2013 and the 34th highest-grossing film of all time.

Just remember that before he was sent to Middle Earth as Gandalf, he was reluctant to go because he feared Sauron. That humility was a major reason for being chosen in the first place. I’m certain Sir Ian knew this, because I can feel Gandalf’s fear the entire time he was with Sauron.

God I love this depiction of Sauron. A spirit, taking on the shape of an eye made of shadow and flame, with the iris showing the body he is trying to create again. Much better than an actual eye stuck on top of a tower. In general, the LotR movies were much better than the Hobbit trilogy, but elements like these are the exceptions.

I love how Gandalfs shield spell is “light”, while Sauron’s is “dark”. Excellent scene!

What is incredible is that Gandalf was able to hold back Sauron with only a small fraction of his full power available to him. Even when he was given life again by Illúvatar and returned as Gandalf the White that is only a small increase in power in comparison to his full might unleashed as his true self Olorin.

This is the most epic scene in the entire trilogy series in my opinion.

If Sauron was so badass and scary then I can't even imagine how strong and scary was Morgoth who he is stronger than Sauron.

Probably the best scene in the film, in my opinion. I love the way they depicted Sauron's anthropomorphic 'form' in infinite fractal movement. Much better than the fiery spotlight eyeball in the LotR.

I always felt like Gandalf was far more powerful than we got see but this is such an amazing scene. Gandalf was always my favorite LOTR character.

Sauron is just a powerful being, can't help but imagine how strong Melkor AKA Morgoth was and even an elf warrior who went toe to toe with him and had to cheat his way out. We need a movie or series on Morgoth
