I did not know that those existed! I'd love to find an ALCO S2 in S Scale, will have to keep my eyes peeled.

Slit wheels act as commutator for the direct drive motor.😳😳

That’s one unique drive system- never seen anything quite like it, besides the General Models 2-pole “motor” found inside their “hand car” (speeder) and birney trolley. I wouldnt consider it the best way to move a locomotive around, too much speed and too little torque... but I love how strange it is.
