Bioplastics vs. Oil-based plastics, who wins? Apart from being better for the environment, can bioplastics truly match their oil-based counterparts?

As the bioplastic industry develops and adoption becomes widespread, the functionality of bioplastics will progress. Prices will drop, meaning that bioplastics could soon become the norm.

Watch the final episode of Our Plastic Predicament to find out if (and how!) bioplastics can match oil-based plastics.

The format is so freaking good, damn! With such a quality, you should skyrocket. I would like to quote your channel in a presentation for my Engineering School. May I?

Keep up the good work, that's fantastic.

Thanks for making these videos. I am studying a design degree and have been researching ways to improve the design of kitchen cleaning products by lowering the impact on the environment. I found this video really useful and hope that more time and money is invested in this area.

Please make more of these. There are new bioplastic coming to market right now and they are better than PLA. Also your style is fabulous

Just ban conventional plastics for any application that doesn't require them. Who the hell needs a plastic cup or straw that lasts ten thousand years?

This just proves my theory on government and money. It is clear that alternatives are available and ready to replace at least 80% of all plastic made from petro, the problem is that it is not available, the problem is those whose interest collides with reality wont allow it and they use their economic power to by legislation. Its crazy to think that the only reason why something stays in use when there is a cleaner renewable method or product ready and waiting, is to keep jobs. Yes i know we are doomed to use petrol for the for the foreseeable but damn the side products should not be with us for 1000 or more years.

Companies that create bioplastic products don't sacrifice margins, because they charge quite a bit extra for them, they sacrifice market share.

Great Video! It took time to concentrate again after being distracted for the first time. I am highly interested in this tech and have been looking into this tech for past few months and past 4 days on youtube. Google god is lenient on me today I think. Thanks! :)

0:58 ㅗㅜㅑ point. It seems eco-friendly to make bio-plastics, not oil. However, bioplastics that need to be decomposed by heat are having difficulty in post-production processing. PHA, which decomposes without heat, looks better in the future than PLA, where raw plastic decomposes only into heat. In the future, PHA materials will become more perfect eco-friendly materials.

Hi there.. i wanna ask a question.. why does bioplastics needs to be "made" bio-degradable?? Aren't they supposed to be able to biodegrade by nature?? Or is it true that they mostly contain 30-50% polymer? And if so, how is it bio?? We only reduce the use if oil based plastics but it doesn't solve our waste management system.. also... since they are bio... what will happen if they got "magically" stranded under the sea like the normal plastics?? Will they biodegrade aswell?? Will the fish be able to digest them?? And about biodegradable plastics, when will they start becoming "bio"?? Or do they just become microplastics and being blown away by the winds and into our lungs??

Please do help me with these questions...
Thank you

Hi. Do you think that with a lower cost of raw materials like cassava, for example, bioplastic overall production costs could be closer to oil based plastic?

Oil isn't cheap. Factor in the wars and unnecessary economic hitman as well as long term damage to the environment including the landfills bioplastic it's actually cheaper. Long term.

Plus, our monetary system is completely made up. Invented. Our idea of good business has to change because business is ALWAYS personal and more informed consumers are a part of it.

I like my version of capitalism not the current without Morality it's done too much damage that is unnecessary.

"Slow Death by Rubber Duck" is a good book to check out. Few others. Important to understand what you are buying and why?

Precious Plastics is also a good project to check out. Cleaning up the current plastic and manufacturing healthier products is much more logical.

I especially like the woman who recycles chewing gum into products...

Good video...

Bio plastic is biodegradable only in controlled industrial pits i.e. pla

Pla is worse because it is not even recyclable and if kept in open environment then it behaves as normal ppastic
