Colour Grading ProRes RAW | Tutorial & Walkthrough

Further to my last BTS video, here's how I colour graded the short film 'KERNOW', produced in partnership with Panasonic Lumix and Atomos, shot on the BGH1 & Ninja V, which now support ProRes RAW.

This was my first time working with ProRes RAW footage, and it was an absolute dream. As someone who is used to working with normal ProRes codecs as well as Panasonic V-Log, I was surprised how familiar it felt, being able to quickly convert the RAW footage to V-Log/V-Gamut directly in the settings of Final Cut Pro X. Now I'm looking forward to doing more experimentation and working directly with the RAW footage, to see what results I can get without doing the Log conversion. It will be interesting to see if it changes my color grading workflow. The BGH1 produces a beautifully cinematic image, it's an absolute beast paired up with Ninja V and has slotted straight into my setup. 12 bit ProRes RAW, what more could you ask for?

I don’t believe how much of the highlights are retained with that sunset! Truly an underrated combo

Great work man! Really interested in picking up a BGH1 coming from a GH5. I love coloring my footage so having that extra bit depth would be dope. I just love having IBS in the GH5 though. Also I'm a premiere user so I'm not sure if i'll get all the features.

Great video! Especially the tipp to create .luts in PS. I was wondering how you go about fixing lens distortion with your proresraw footage?

I’ve just picked up an atomos ninja v with my panasonic s5 and did a quick edit in adobe premiere of some footage shot on a sigma 28-70 f2.8 but i don’t really know how fix the lens distortion without relying solely on my subjective interpretation.

i understand there’s no automated fix to this issue comparable to how lightroom fixes lens distortion in .raw images?

thanks!

G'day Tommy, thanks for the informative walkthrough here. Rare to see the photoshop workflow, shows a real commitment to getting it right. Do you use a rec709 conversion lut before going to PS or do you just work straight off the raw/log?

Hello and congratulations on your work! Last year I bought my first Lumix, an S1, and I'm thrilled with the files it produces! I was wondering about the conversion from RAW to Log: do you lose something in terms of color depth, elasticity of the file etc? Is it advisable to avoid this conversion and work directly the RAW file as if it were a log? Thank you!

Have you had to use noise reduction software with any of your projects projects filmed in prores raw? I'm going to be renting a Ninja V for a project and was curious as to how excessive the noise will be.
