The battle of Maiwand - The Second Anglo - Afghan War

The War was fought between the the British Raj and the Emirate of Afghanistan from 1878 to 1880. This was the second time British India invaded Afghanistan. As a result of the war Afghanistan's frontier tribal areas were annexed by British India and Afghanistan became a British Protectorate.

I have a letter dated 17th of July, 1880 from a relative, Officer William Hamilton McMath, 66th Regiment, that was printed in a gazette titled 'Last Letter of an Irish Officer'. He was writing to his wife about how they had been 14 hours in the saddle after engaging Ayoub Khan's forces on the Helmand. They had returned to Camp Khusk-i-Nakhud for rest and resupply and intended to re-engage in the next few days. He wrote of the irony of now having to fight a force with whom the British government had only recently supplied arms. Ten days later they were ambushed.
