Reverse Shoulder Replacement and Post-op Exercises

Reverse total shoulder replacement is a great option for patients who have arthritis in the shoulder as well as a rotator cuff tear. Patients are usually in the hospital for less than 24 hours and never require formal therapy. CHI Health orthopedic surgeon Dr. Sam Dubrow discusses this procedure and demonstrates the exercises he prescribes to his patients following surgery.

This does not accurately describe the post operative rehab course for a patient who has undergone a reverse shoulder replacement. This is a 6-12 month rehab process with physical therapy. Would suggest watching the video put out by Dr. Jeff Waldron, DPT, OCS, COMT titled, Total Shoulder Replacement Physical Therapy 016. He presents an accurate description of the surgery and a realistic representation of the rehab process.

Unable to do those exercises 5 weeks after surgery because it is too painful for me to lay flat on a bed. Still have to sleep on a sofa.

Good to know. I just had a left total reverse shoulder replacement 2 days ago. I see my surgeon in 2 weeks. I am looking forward to a quick return to function. I am a very busy retired woman. I had a right rotator cuff repair 15 yrs ago by the same surgery. Recovery was about 12 weeks

I'm 5 weeks into recovering from this procedure. I'm amazed that the pain is almost zero😊 it's more discomfort that is annoying. Love this procedure 😍

I still cant get my shoulder over my head like the woman in the video did. It has been a month and yes there is pain . I must build my muscles again one week no formal therapy???? II wish it was that easy.

According to this guy, it would appear that major surgery such as this is simple and straightforward. Definitely Not! Pain and inflammation get severely in the way of doing most of the exercises he has demonstrated with a person that has not had should replacement therapy. Looks easy and quick it is not. It takes many months to achieve what is shown here if ever. I was told maximum range is likely to be 70%. I am still recovering from my surgery 3 months on and likely I have another 3 months to go. Incidentally I had 3 months of physiotherapy, every day for the first 6 weeks.

Thankyou 1 week tomorrow I had my reverse. Follow up in 2 days, I’m so excited to not have the debilitating pain as I did before, still in my sling and pretty much pain free

I just had a shoulder replacement a week ago. There is no way I can move my arm above my head at this point!

Wouldn't it be more realistic if this person actually had reverse shoulder surgery? Not just a pretty reenactment with someone who isn't identifying with the pain that assisted range of motion causes. Don't let anyone fool you physical therapy is needed for weeks and with my husband pain was involved. My husband is still having some pain & sleeping in his recliner.

If this guy is performing the surgery I would NOT get it done by him. Therapy after the surgery is definitely not "as simple as that".

I had a reverse shoulder replacement almost three months ago took 1 pain pill and pain free since. I have P T 3 times a week and progressing well. I am glad of therapy. Would not have wanted to do the exercises on my own

Wrong wrong wrong! Therapy is needed. This guy doesn’t know what he is talking about! I had a total reverse shoulder replacement so I know first hand! Watch other videos skip this guy!

This video is very accurate. For people having problems you must have been in horrible shape and not active. The best part of this surgery is it requires you to use the deltoid muscles. That's it. And if your deltoid muscle is weak that's on you.

How many months after surgery can you sleep on the repaired side? Great video by the way. Having this surgery in December and makes me feel a lot less apprehensive about it. Thanks!

I just had a reverse shoulder replacement surgery going on two weeks ago. I am very stiff and when I stand with the arm hanging it doesn’t hang properly. It is forward a bit and very tight. Is this normal? The only exercise I’ve done is the pendulum swing. I see my doctor in a week.

🚨 Do not reach behind your back to the middle. The area where women close their bra in back is a “danger zone” where the joint may become dislocated requiring surgery to repair the metal joint.
