Painting a Pottery Jar with a Yellow Iron Ochre Slip

preview_player
Показать описание
Brushing a jar with a yellow iron oxide slip in an attempt to save the vessel. If you’ve been following along recently you might have seen some bowls coated thickly with this iron mixture, which were fired again and came out of the kiln fantastically. So this is an attempt to fix a jar that I don’t particularly like. A waste maybe, perhaps I should just make and fire another one but I really want to see that fluid, metallic surface on one of these. I'll be firing this early next week, so hopefully I'll have some results to show you soon, (if it fires nicely).

Like I always mention, these videos make up just a tiny portion of the content I upload to YouTube. If you like these then I'm sure you'll love the longer format videos I post too. Take a look on my channel to find them!

Please show us the results, I love the raw colour and am hopeful for the fired version.

Uh, wait a second!! I didn’t know you could apply slip/more clay to a previously fired piece. Totally interested in seeing the final result. I thought the “Vessels” looked beautiful BEFORE the slip. 😃👍

I've been painting since I was in middleschool, but the sight of paint neatly covering an area will always be satisfying

The colour of that glaze (pre furnace) should be a paint colour it is just the most beautiful shade of mustard yellow ever!

How many times have those pieces been fired prior to the slip coat? And is that a clear glaze on them already? Or do they look shiny because they’re so smooth?

I don't know exactly how to ask this question. This iron oxide on a already finished pot turns it a black golden, really pretty effect... Is there another slip that would do the same kind of thing, but maybe a red or blue or green/ black effect? Perhaps you could do a video exploring those different slips? We've seen the iron oxide, maybe you could explore other ones? Thank you for reading my question 🫒🌾🌿

i'm curious, as a potter, what kind of day to day wares and item do you think is notoriously tricky to make even in the pottery community?

I thought you use the slip as a glue to attach clay together

When it's fired, will the original layer of glaze melt again?

For your fails try and thicken the smount of clay for the pots or plates and stuff so it doesnt fall over and move slowly so you dint push it over
