“Many non-native English speakers” - or millions of native English speakers who aren’t familiar with the goofy non-phonetic pronunciations of place names in Britain.

In south Texas, USA there's a border town called Edinburg it's predominantly Mexican-American hispanics so in spanish they commonly pronounce it "Edinburgo"

It’s ed-in-buh-ruh, often shortened to ed-in-bruh because Scots tends to do that. Other places names like Fraserburgh and Musselburgh are the same.

The city I grew up in was going to be named after Edinburgh but they felt it was too exotic. It got named Edina instead and no one outside of MN can pronounce it. It's pronounced "Ee-dinah" but when hear "a-DEE-na" on the phone I know the caller is from out of state!

I'm from the USA. I learned many years ago that there was no "burg" in Edinburgh. I learned to pronounce it as ED-n-bur-a. In 1988 I met someone who was from Western Maine who had moved to Edinburgh (He was half-Scottish and took an interest in Scotland). He came home for a visit. When someone asked him, "When are you going back to Edinburg?" I then asked, "Isn't it pronounced Edinburra?" He responded, "It's EDinbulruh. You were close."

Much the same here in the U.S. How to pronounce "Louisville..as in Kentucky, for example..can be rather comical. Lu.ville, Lu-vul, Lou'is-ville or plain Lou-e-ville, keeping the "e" somewhat silent. Among several others. Most just pronounce it.."Bourbon". That is if you are aware that is what they are known for other than horseracing. Love Scotland and want to return soon!
