"Close packing" refers to the most tightly packed or space-efficient composition of crystal structures( lattices). The spheres must be arranged as close as possible to each other to minimize the volume of unfilled space.

The ABC is a face centered cubic arrangement I believe. It's the most effect way to pack. I don't know if the ABAB layering is anything other than hexagonal closed packing.
