This is the Sony A7S 8Bit VS GH4 10Bit Video test. Both shot it with the Atomos Shogun. I have been wanting to do this comparison for so long. I know a lot of people on Youtube did the comparison already. But most of them just compare the 1080p on A7S and 4K on GH4. I personally think thats not the real comparison between these two cameras. It has to be 4K VS 4K. So I had to wait over months and months for the Atomos Shogun to release. Finally the video is here. Since one camera is full frame and the other one is 2.3x crop. So I decided to switch the A7S to APS-C mode, and put the SpeedBooster on the GH4. Then 2 cameras will become very close to the Super 35mm sensor. So which one do you think has the better image?

A7S Pros
-World first 4K Full Frame camera
-Super Great Low light performance

A7S Cons
-Poor Battery life
-No Internal 4K recording

GH4 Pros
-10Bit color output
-Internal 4K recording

GH4 Cons
-2.3X crop in 4K
-Poor low light performance (Unusable after 1600ISO)

One issue I see with this test is the reduced quality you get when using the A7S in crop mode and shooting in 4k. When putting the A7S in crop mode you are only using 5mp and you need 8mp to capture 4k resolution with maximum detail. The GH4 sensor was able to capture at its maximum resolution using the maximum amount of megapixels (8mp) while the A7S was merely up scaling a 1080p clip to 4K. I have an A7S and had 3 GH4s and prefer the GH4 for run and gun but for on set filming and in door shots the A7S is an all around better camera without a doubt. Next time allow the A7S to capture 4K without a crop factor then you are allowing it to use the maximum number of pixels needed for 4K and crop in post if you must or just use a zoom lens and match the distance/scale.

Thank you very much for this comparison video. To me, the most striking part is at 1:47, the GH4 footage looks more saturated than the a7s (colors look washed out), but if you pay attention to the foliage on the tree in the lower left corner, you can see "mud" on the GH4 footage. It reminds me of the "mud" issue with the GH1 before the firmware hack came out. This is very strange since both camera used the same recorder and codec.

a7s is the low light king..during the day i would give it to gh4..at night..sony has no competition..

It will be interesting to see what the vLOG will be capable of once its completely done, the beta firmware had some bugs and issues in it.

You should of ditched the speed booster IMO it is not as sharp as the native Panasonic lens. ( edges are soft with the aperture opened )

To me it looks like both cameras would do the job just fine during the day, and if you needed night shots, the Sony would be the clear choice. GH4 user here. I'd never shoot above ISO 800 if I could help it on my unit, though I don't mind that limitation at all as I prefer to shoot with proper lighting when possible. If I had the cash at this point, I'd probably be less inclined to buy a new camera body and more inclined to pick up some Voigtlander f0.95 glass.

How about some sunset/sunrise video- where you get the extreme color and banding. I think that is when you'll see why 8bit vs 10bit matter

Should've used full frame mode with slog2 or cine4 on the a7s

The speed booster degrades the image quality from the GH4 slightly and can increase the moiré effect, that is why the image quality doesn't seem up to par with the A7s in the side by side.

To do a "true" test you would need a native micro four thirds lens on the GH4 without the added glass from the speedbooster. You would also want to make sure and color grade them to the same specs.

The real selling factor for the GH4/Shogun combo is that 10bit footage. It allows extraordinary latitude in post that you are unable to get with the 8bit A7s footage. This is especially true if you are filming in a flat profile and bringing the image back through color grading.

The Sony a7s is much better.. Better dynamic range, sharper detailed image, and better low light performance.. In those respects it wins hands down. What a machine
