A router plane is a hand tool that cuts a parallel channel below the baseplate, or sole. This makes them perfect for cleaning up cuts that you’ve already hogged out. For example, if I’ve made several passes with a table saw in a dado channel, I’m always left with a chewed out face. With a router plane, I can easily clean off the face. Instead of using a sander or a chisel to make dowels flush on the face, a router plane will clean it up easily. They’re also good for squaring up edges or for inlay work.
They’re very similar to shoulder planes that have blades the full width of the body. But router planes can do something that most hand planes can’t do, which is really important if you’re just starting out with hand planes. Because of the angle of the blade, they are incredibly easy to sharpen. While most hand planes require you to remove the blade and use a jig of some kind to sharpen it, you can cut a channel in a block of wood, add a sharpening stone and sharpen the blade with it still attached to the plane. This makes sharpening brilliantly simple. I have a video that I’ve made for this inexpensive vevor router plane that will explain much more as well as how to make this sharpening jig.
