I should have rephrased that amp hour capacity is dependent on nominal voltage. Because amp hour rating is technically not dependent on voltage at all. But that's not the point I was trying to make. Determining capacity with amp hours is dependent on nominal voltage. Hope that makes sense

Knowing something for so long, it is hard to realize there are 'new' people who have not learned basic concepts like this. Good job going back to the 'ground floor' and helping people get up to speed.

That was a good run down. I think the confusion is also in wiring configuration.
2x 12V 100ah in series is 24V 100ah
2x 12V 100ah in parallel is 12V 200ah
And both configurations are 2400wh.

Good clarification will. Keep them coming, noobs like me are learning alot from your videos. Your DIY videos are always enlightening.

Here is an interesting thing I learned last year. An SLA battery only delivers approximately half of its AH rating in a discharge depending on discharge rate. At C/1 discharge rate only about 30% of its rated capacity. However a LiFePO battery delivers almost all of its capacity no matter the discharge rate and it is lighter. So for many applications, the LiFePO battery is far superior.

You could also do one about voltage and amps in relationship to cable size. It would tie in nicely with this one.

(retired electrical engineer)

Great little video that every beginner should watch, and more than one time.

Just to add my 2 cents worth for the beginner:

Total energy is measured in Watt Hours, (among other units of measure) Important for energy sources such as batteries.
Watt Hours =Watts x Time

Rate of energy transfer (Power) is measured in Watts. Important for inverters, light bulbs, appliances, etc.
Watts = Volts x Amperes
Watts = Volts (think of as pressure) multiplied by Amperes (think of as rate of flow)

P.S.
Battery Amp Hour rating is typically measured over 20 hours, not 1 hour.
You will get fewer Amp Hours if measured over 1 hour and more when measured over more than 20 hours.
Lithium batteries can be discharged much more completely than lead acid batteries.
Lead acid batteries therefore, yield less total energy for similar ratings.

Just when I'm getting ready to go to sleep you post another video. In that case, I'm glad it's a short one! 👍😴

Hey Will! This is an excellent tutorial! I'm always seeking to learn, and this tutorial is so well done that I'll be recommending it to friends. I know that you are very expertly knowledgeable about these things, so I very much appreciate you taking the time to inform those of us who are beginners or simply not experts. This knowledge will go a long way in helping myself and others make informed decisions and satisfying purchases. Good health and happiness to you and everyone you love. Especially the kitties!

You never know when a newbie will stumble onto your channel and find it interesting. I appreciate all the comments trying to help you explain this concept to the newbie by way of demonstrating all their knowledge and leaving us more confused in their attempt to showcase their technical prowess. Your explanation was simple, to the point and non-condescending. You are well served throwing one of these type explanation videos in every once in a while. You certainly will broaden your audience base. Thanks for all your content.

Thank you for simplifying. I was today years old when when I learned this!

Boy you made that sound simple I just wish you'd have done it a couple of years ago I would have definitely gone with 24 volt or 48 volt in my camper instead I went with 12 volt thanks all know next time, I was reading in the comments below that I didn't go back far enough on your videos to see that you explain this before but to be honest I didn't know what I was looking for I wouldn't understand it at that time I do now thank you.

Not quite correct on your assumptions though; depending on the battery type, Lead Acid Based batteries will only supply half the calculated W/h due to DoD.
But you are doing a great job with your videos and I enjoy watching them. 😊

Great video that needed to be explained. When I was starting out it took me a bit of time to rap my head around it but it's like riding a bike once you get it, you get it. I've come across this question from viewer and now I can give this video link 👍
