This video highlights the unique contributions of sociology to the understanding of today’s most divisive issues, sixteen sociologists speak briefly to the need for and impact of their field.

“Sociologists on Sociology” is a primer on a discipline that studies many of the major issues confronting American society. As one respondent puts it: “So much of what is going on with our political climate and the rhetoric right now is all about talking about individual people or individual communities. The reality is, these are collective problems that have structural bases.”

From sexuality to criminology and from religion to the family, sociologists are investigating and reporting on the most sensitive problems confronting American society.

My sociology major chose me. All my life I have always been a peoples person to the point that understanding individuals in society has mattered to me since I was a little girl. I grew up in poverty and often wondered the structures to succeed in social problems, a solution to the problem. It wasn’t in till the last two semesters left that I found out I’d be a sociology graduate. I am happy to be an individual that is able to help
others

I’ve kept my head in the sand, mostly isolated from family and peers growing up. (High school drop out to boot) Yet, I became enthralled in the study of human behavior as a pre-teen. Ignoring the news, newspapers, anything political or historical. I found it too stressful. But studying human behavior makes me so happy. I’m a system-thinker, and have always had the ability to detach from what’s happening around me and analyze it. I do this more often than not, as I struggle to actually “be present” with the crowd. (Partially due to being autistic.) but I fear the stress of political and historical data will crush my brain. I’m wondering though if I should go ahead and pursue going to school for it anyway, and maybe close the gap on my lack of formal historical/political education.

You know what *_I_* never understood in my sociology course? Why rape is only considered a serious issue if it's a man on a woman. We talked about how many people find it both funny and ridiculous if a woman rapes a man. Impossible too. After learning about the subject, I STILL don't get it. It's the same crime, so why the general perspective that it's no big deal or just pure laughable?

Please, NO BACKGROUND MUSIC!!! This video is 5 years old, and maybe you didn't know any better way back then. By now, you should be abundantly aware that adding extraneous background music to an informational video adds an easily avoidable accessibility hurdle for anyone who needs to listen to your content at speeds other than 1.0, and those who find it impossibly distracting due to neurodivergency. Skipping the music also simplifies your production process and lowers your costs. Please adhere to universal design principles.

I have to ask this question, does anyone out there who has a degree in sociology feel that the human interaction between person to person is one characteristic of sociology that is being slowly dismissed or is it more of a scientific principle that doesn't call for this interaction and can be substituted at will? How important is it it for us to be "social" in terms of the terminology sociology?

Sociology is the most complete social science, only in America many ignorants limit the discipline.
