I like how he keeps on upshifting and then downshifting a nano second later instead of just running out the revs. Shows how natural gear changes are to him, like breathing. This guy came out of his mother's womb in 3rd, sideways. 👌

This is the ideal driver. You may not like it, but this is what peak performance looks like.

when most people get understeer, they panic and slam on the brakes, usually crashing.

when Tsuchiya gets understeer, he dabs the brake for a split second, shifting weight to the front wheels, and then sharply throttles on, pushing the back end forward, and forcing the front wheels to grip, and then initiating a dance between both ends of the car as they fight each other to get through the corner first. amazing.

I’m happy to see Tsuchiya watched by foreign people on YouTube today. Hero when I was young over 20 years ago.

The dude's like a human automatic gearbox.

The makers of Gran Turismo should include this track in the game. The fanbase would explode of excitement.

On the inside, it looked like he was having difficulty if you were new to drifting, but when you look at the outside highlights, it is just downright godlike

The drifting is so incredibly smooth you could sip coffee on the passenger's seat.

On board you wouldn't think he's actually making the car run sideways but it is actually running sideways in corners.

3:16 Jesus, this guy is driving this car so smooth that it looks like it's from a video game!

*For the ones wondering if he invented Drift:*

"By driving hard on all types of surfaces and conditions he learned car control at the limits. In 1977 he debuted in the Fuji Freshman series, this was followed by several amateur racing events. 1984 saw him getting a drive with the Advan AE86/1984 Corolla GT-S. The Drift King was born. In this series his technique of using drift (sliding the rear of the car out) in a downhill corner yielded a better corner speed and improved lap times. This technique is what made him the Drift King not as most believe that he was first in the drift scene."

The sound of that car in the hands of a professional is something else. Keeps those revs right where they need to be.

1:32 seems a very dangerous section, especially for those a bit more inexperienced with RWD, but Tsuchiya-san has been doing this since 1977 (when his _professional_ career started. He got his experience street racing and doing this for real).

At 1:35 you see him cut the steering wheel to the left suddenly - this is because he was going over bumps, and he felt the rear get lighter and start to shift to the left which is the first tell-tale sign of snap oversteer. Tsuchiya-san corrected for this in a split second and actually used the weight transfer to prepare for the next corner. Absolute legend of a driver.

I've watched all of Tsuchiya's best motoring and hot version content, but I still can't get over how much this mirrors initial D. I know Tsuchiya was an advisor and even possibly the motivation for the series, but he's unreal.

What a insane driving skill, he made a dinosaur flys like a rocket.

the speed he was driving with, wow. Especially in such a dangerous place. Super talented man

hopefully after this, people can finally understand, the ae86 was never a drift car but infact a highly praised track car which was capable of swinging its tail if you wanted it to
