Swatching All 100 Luminance from Caran D'Ache

In today's video, I swatch all the 100 luminance from Caran d'Ache, so you can see how they look. I also detail pigment information of each and tell you which one to get and which one I wouldn't pick.

I actually ended up covering most of the original drawing with luminance for lightfastness reasons

🌈 Thank you! I learned so much about pigments, and now don’t feel quite so badly about not being able to afford the whole set. I will start with an essential few and practice blending!

Thank you, it was useful. I will go for the pure pigments mostly 😊🙏

🌈 thank you so much, that was the most informative and comprehensive swatching video Ive seen (and Ive seen a lot lol). Very helpful for me, trying to decide if I want a complete set of luminance or derwent lightfast, or bits of both.

I love my luminance. Their color range for skin tone is unbelievable. The best. However I must say Derwent Lightfast is also up there. When Derwent came out with that line…they really hit the ground running. I find myself reaching for the Lightfast even more than my Luminance. Unless of course I’m doing portrait work. Loved the swatching session. ❤

thank you for this beautiful video. i have just bought a 20-set of Luminance as it was on a huge sale (I only colour in colouring books so its hard to justify the price otherwise). cannot wait for delivery to test them out! watching this gave me a much deeper understanding of how these pencils relate to each other in terms of pigment etc. what a lovely video to watch while I'm swatching my budget Arrtx pencil set 😊
(Edited to include 🌈! 😌)

I already own all of these, but this was so lovely to watch. I think I'm actually going to use your colour order for my new colour chart because the way Caran d'Ache organised theirs make no sense to me and I end up just using the same colours every time. I agree about the greens, I always hope for more Luminance colours, especially now that Derwent Lightfast exists as competition. (I prefer Luminance to Lightfast because I'm not a big fan of oil pencils)

I think the "don't use black" mantra is more about using pure black in a painting rather than changing the value of a hue. Personally I like darkening my hues by adding in the complementary colors because it feels more cohesive as a whole and doesn't stand out like a sore thumb when someone just adds black to a hue to paint the shadow color. Nice video though :)

Watched the whole thing. I'll have to look to see if you have posted a follow up lightfastness test yet. 🌈

Agreed on the peach vs apricot, we have the same ones in the US :)

Thank you for the pigment breakdown; it looks like one could have lots of options with about half-plus from the set via open stock 🌈

I never thought about the pigment info of these pencils.

I wonder what surprises your lightfast test will bring because in some other mediums (like gouache) a pigment that is lightfast by itself or in mass tone turns out to be more fugitive when mixed with white pigments (PW4 or PW6).

My guess is that many of the colors in this range don't disclose their use of a white pigment. I don't know how you would otherwise be able to get that variety of muted tints and tones.
