Sorry Atari #59: Atari 2600 Battle Zone Unboxing and Gameplay

Today we take a look at one of the Atari 2600's better moments. sometimes a good VCS port happens because the programmer recognizes the limits of the platform and focuses on the spirit of the game rather than making a pale clone of the original. That's what happened here. NEW sealed box unboxing and (bad) gameplay.

I was so pissed off when I played the Atari ST version of this game. Instead of being like the Arcade version, it was like a more advanced VCS version. Give me wireframe vector graphics over this POS any time!


I have nothing against the VCS version, it looks amazing for the system.

Gameplay wise this port of Battlezone is decent for the Atari 2600. Would be cool if someone did a current homebrew arcade version with vector like graphics similar to Suicide Mission. And I had that Atari catalog flyer on my wall in the 80's for quite a long time. I LOVE the look of many of Atari's 8 bit/5200 games with Pacman on the Atari 8bit being one of my favorite looking ports. Its almost like its own style.

Another total tangent quite a few years back they made a fun game/app for the iOS ecosystem called Vector Tanks or a more recent version Panzerkampf 3 that takes Battlezone to another level. I will have to try out the Activision Robot Tank. That's one I don't think I've ever played. :)
