Yeap, this novella is amazing. It sheds more light on the relationship between the Marlowe brothers. Add more depth to Hadrian's character from Crispin POV

Queen Amid Ashes is worth reading as well. It takes place chronologically after Howling Dark.

Hi Matt. I 100% agree with you - it was very enjoyable, "not headache" read (I don't know if that makes sense in English). Seeing some events from younger brother's prospective, gained somehow to the "world" complexity, more colors.
The religious part made me think of a sort of French version of the Amish community. I'm not sure it was very relevant, but hey - it's science fiction fantasy, I won't criticize the author's choice.

Great review! I don’t think the religious theme stuff took away from my experience of the book but I agree I could’ve done without most of it at the same time. I loved getting a new perspective on Crispin and seeing him grow over the course of the book too. He’ll be so much more sympathetic for me when I go back to read Empire of Silence!

I think I read this after Demon in White. I also skip novellas and short stories a lot of times. I don't skip them in Sun Eater because they are all great.

You were so right in your Empire of Silence review where you can’t see how that’s the worst one in the series because it was so good. I completely see how that would be hard to believe but I’m telling you, it only gets better! 💯

I don't often read the "inbetween"/'novella" books that show up in series....for whatever reason I just don't. So when you said book 2, I was like huh, he must be talking about a different Sun Eater....then you explained what this was. :) But yeah, this series is amazing...I've read through Book 4 so far.
