Understanding the repetition compulsion

In his early work, Freud focused on catharsis and attempted to my pass the ego and it's defenses by using hypnosis. However, over time, he noticed the return of the repressed and came to the conclusion that the ego must be strengthened in order to tolerate and integrate previously unconscious feelings, impulses and wishes. This is no easy task. Patients often repeat, instead of remembering, especially via enactments in the transference. It is essential to understand this phenomenon in order to use it therapeutically.

I thank you very much for uploading this video for the general public. Knowledge is power and can heal so much.

Extra points for CORRECTLY using “phenomenon” for the singular rather than SO MANY other YouTubers who incorrectly use “phenomena” as singular!

I just started a motivation course. Of course, Freud mentioned... so confusing.. "death instinct", say what? Thanks for the heads up.

Thank you for this explanation. Very helpful. I'd like to hear more about "guilt over their own destructive impulses'... Is the idea here that if one refuses to participate in such punitive relationships, one is being disloyal (destructive) to the originators of the relationship (i.e. primary caregivers)..and because the guilt of that can't be tolerated, the pattern of suffering continues? (thanks if you choose to answer this.)

Thank you for this video! It is indeed one of the rare and useful content on the internet. However, as someone who has the problem you mentioned, I must say; By looking at the information you have given and most of the resources around me, I realize that you are only talking about my symptoms. I already know my own symptoms. What should I do? Please don't tell me to go to a psychologist, as a matter of fact, I'm a 27-year-old young psychologist, but I still haven't found a solution to my problem. I am so tired and worn out. Please simply tell me: What should I do to stop my repetition compulsion?

Do you recommend reading all of Freud’s work? Or do you have resources for better understanding his work in general?
